A single ring at the front has become increasingly common on MTB and other off-road bikes.

The purported idea is that there is less to go wrong at the front, especially if riding in muddy conditions, and can in theory give a similar range of gears (though at the expense of having larger steps between gears). In some scenarios it can make sense (e.g. if you're unlikely to be pedalling down long gradual descents).

The more cynical interpretation is that SRAM pushed it as they couldn't make a front mech as good as their competitors!

I'm not truly convinced myself, but I'm 90% roadie, so like both range and small steps.

Thanks MM. I don’t really know what I’m talking about. I only know the little bit I do because I’ve been on a couple of rides with an experienced MTBer and she is really enthusiastic about sharing her knowledge.

Well she was instrumental in my spending a lot of money (for me) on a bike.

Fyi, rules for bike pics. Drivetrain side to the camera, no chimney above the stem, no bags/bottles/lights/phone holders, valves lines up on both wheels, chain on big front/small rear, writing in the same place on both tyres relative to the wheel and make sure it's clean.

Or you know, just point, click and be happy :)

Have you tried some waterproof socks and/or show covers? Keeping out the wind helps massively. I always find getting out of the saddle every now and then helps a little too.

My body temp was warm enough, and my jacket is windproof.

I went for 3/4 padded trews, but conceding I am gonna double layer those with longer running ones over the top I think.

I don't have waterproof socks, but i will look into them.... shoe covers feels like a bridge too far for a girl like me.........

You can get ones that just cover the toe of your shoes so they're not quite so full on but keep the wind off your feet. They do work suprisingly well.

Winter kit is next on my list. I’ve been for a blast on the new bike. OMG I love it.
