So obviously that’s a MTB xcountry kinda bike

How will it be for general cycling, ie the road miles to get to the trails?
Do modern bikes just run fairly light and smooth as a rule anyway?

Longest ride for me today thus far - a smidge under 20 miles. Mostly very nice, last stretch to home marred by impatient motorists not giving us much space - the only time it happened and right on our home patch!

I can avoid roads to a great extent Maz so not too bothered about that side of things. I’m all about the off road tbh.

Nice one AL. Wanky drivers are a nuisance aren’t they. We had one gesticulating at us yesterday because we were 2 abreast and there was a car behind us. People don’t seem to get that it’s safer for cyclist and easier for driver to pass.

apologies if you read this twice, posted on commuter thread too

I booked my bike in for a free Health Check at Halfords last week.... I know they get bad press but I can't fault the guy I got....

He asked me if i had any areas of concern, I said my brakes felt a bit below par, but otherwise ok. I told him I'd recently changed my own inner tube, (he said pressure good and all fine), and told him I'd recently fitted my SPD pedals, so he double checked the torque on pedals (a smidge more torque on them but not far off, go me!)

He said new pads wouldn't go amiss, and he offered to do them there and then, and tightened brake cables. Feels great now, so much more responsive.

Also recommended a new chain and rear cassette in the next few months. They were smooth enough, but definitely a bit stretched.

Rang the transaction thru £28.99 for pads and labour, and then promptly shoved it on a government voucher to cover cost.

As I am utterly skint, I could have kissed him!

That's great Maz.

I am gutted. The bike I ordered is now (for reasons unknown) no longer available. Back to my crappy bike with ineffective suspension. Plan is to get suspension looked at or probably just get a new set of forks.
