Didn’t he mess up your other bike, HP?

Same bike. I took it back for him to tweak and it’s exactly the same. Trying to work out if I’m being stupid or he’s misleading me because he can’t sort it.

My gears make such a variety of noises I'm maybe not the best judge, but ... I don't think that's right. Middle ring (it must be a triple?) should be ok for the whole cassette. If it was small front and small back, then yes, expect scraping as ideally you shouldn't be cross-chaining like that. Some set-ups have a kind of "double-throw" for the front derailleur. That can cause scraping. But it's not the same as being not properly set up. |

I know that I can only use the smallest and biggest rings with either end of the cassette (if that makes sense) but I've always been able to use the full range on the middle ring. There are times when you only need that range and I don't want to have to fanny about getting onto the big ring (because my little hands struggle with shifting there). Besides I haven't ridden the bike regularly for ages and I don't want things to be more complicated than they need to be.

Sounds like the gears aren't indexed properly to me. I have just indexed mine for my hybrid that's sat on the turbo trainer as it was overdue but even with a stretched chain and not having been looked after properly in 9 years, on the middle ring I could still use the full range on the back without issue, just a slight bit of rubbing at either end of the casette under heavy load. That's on a 8 speed with 3 up front using Shimano Acera chainset. I had no idea what I was doing for the indexing but this video walked me through the process and it's worked perfectly. Did the same for the front which they have a video on too. |

I tried faffing with it myself before I took it back to him. I used the park tools adjusting your gears video. I played with limit screws then realised that wasn't the issue as it's the middle ring. I'll have a look at that video ^^ when I have some time. Out for a social ride on MTBs tomorrow. I must book a bike maintenance course ASAP.

If its on the middle of the cassette nothing should rattle, should only do that at the extremes, ie big at front, small at back. Doesn't sound right to me. |

23:45 tonight for the first round of vouchers. Going to see if I can get one and use it for a new crankset as mine is decidedly on it's last legs.

I shan’t be awake then but my old bike definitely needs a service as gears (all 5 of them) are iffy and the breaks aren’t great!
