I made it up the steep hill last Friday, without keeping over. To be fair, I did stop for a rest before going for it, but at least I made it. Cheddar Gorge is in my sights now, although that’s really busy and far more embarrassing when you topple off because it’s too steep.

Ooof, yes Cheddar gorge is tough - I seem to remember it hitting 1 in 5 in one spot. A real sense of achievement though - you can pretend you're in the pyrennees!

AJLB, it’s the 1 in 5 bit that I’m worried about, as well as the 2 and a bit miles of uphill! I missed my chance a few weeks ago when it was shut to stop tourists coming down, now it’s mobbed. If I’m going to topple off on a steep bit, I’d prefer not to have too big an audience

Thanks for the feedback on folding bikes. Much appreciated. Still to decide!

we (bike shops) have the details on the voucher scheme so we can register ourselves. broadly speaking when the scheme starts you get a voucher and bring it to a bike shop that has registered and get £50 towards making your bike roadworthy. so you can spend it on fixing tyres, brakes, lights etc. it must include some labour you can't just upgrade an already working component. I think you are allowed 2 vouchers per household but can only spend one per bike. oh you will need to bring ID too and then there's a bit of faff for the bike shop to get the £50 refunded

the other thing to bear in mind is you will probably find it difficult to find a bike shop without a huge waiting list at the moment even before this scheme has even started!

I'd like to hope that the community-interest bike place that we have at our two stations might be able to accept these vouchers. They do a fantastic service supporting cycling locally so I'd be taking my bike there if I could.
