I’ll second the Brooks Cascadia. They are quite closely related to the Brooks Adrenaline road shoe, but deal well with trails and mud. I wore them on the Lakeland 50 and, if you told me I had to run a road marathon in them, I wouldn’t be delighted, but I’d know I could do it.

I did the UTMB in a pair of Cascadia. I tried the latest variant the other day, much improved but torsionally quite stiff, that could be a good thing of course.

Only just seen this thread, but it’s timely for me as I need a new pair of trail shoes that are cushioned.
I run in cushioned New Balance road shoes but saw mention of the Hierro, which I think has the same foam as the 1080 road shoes I run in a lot. So I may give the Hierro a go.

I totally recommend the Hierro, great shoe - I've had the last three models. The latest (v8) is essentially identical to the v7. If there is one criticism, it's that they do wear a little quickly on the heel, but that's maybe just the way I run, I still get about 600 miles from a pair.

The NB Fresh Foam More Trail would work for the last two questions, too. It is really cushty and works as a road-to-trail.

I have Cascadia 16 I bought originally for walking. They felt stiff initially but seem to have eased a bit and are fine for running. I wear Ghost for road running. Build quality of both is excellent and puts Inov8s I've had in past to shame

Regarding Hierro vs More Trail.
I saw Hierro is 8mm drop and More Trail 4mm.
Being a road runner at heart, I’m not sure what I should go for with trail in terms of drop, but I’m keen to do a bit more with a group I’ve started running with, who prefer trails. Nothing too long, probably 12-15 miles max. My 1080 road shoes are 8mm drop and I was therefore leaning towards Hierro. Plus they’re a bit cheaper, although only a tenner difference, so not really a consideration.
If I can replicate the 1080s in a trail shoe in terms of comfort, that would be great. So still leaning towards Hierro unless anyone thinks I should go for a smaller drop?

I have both, and also 1080s. I wouldn't say you have to go for a lower drop but, if you are used to it, it is an option. I'd check the weights too - my Hierros are GTX so a bit heavier but they fill a niche.
