Is it really possible to have ribs move or cross? Occasionally I seem to have something like this happen to me, particularly if I am bending forwards and take a deep breath. Yesterday it happened when I was putting on socks and it took a while for me to massage it into submission. Then I suffered from an horrendous stitch for an entire 5k.

No, your ribs don't move and I've yet to see an x-ray picture of crossed ribs, but the little muscles between the ribs and the bigger muscles overlying them can go into spasm, giving that sort of sensation, or the nerves that run between and over the ribs can become twitchy and inclined to twinge at random or in particular positions.

It usually happens on and off for a while and then goes away, and is harmless.

Thanks Vrap. I couldn't understand how they might cross but a couple of people told me that was what it was. Muscle spasm makes more sense. I never thought of it as anything to worry about, just a painful nuisance.

Got something to say?
