Hmm, I'd be for leaving things as they are. parkrun's whatever you want it to be: PB attempt, tempo run, social event, easy bimble with the kids. Personally, I don't think it needs a category, because everything is already covered. :)

Yay thank you Fetch!

I asked for this a little while ago, whilst I agree I often treat it as a race or tempo run logging them as one category means I can compare them easily. :)

parkrun is a bit of a contradiction in itself as a category!

I'm a big fan of parkrun and at our one-year anniversary awards at the weekend I got Volunteer of the Year :-) However, it REALLY annoys me this business of is it 'logged' as an official race or not. Let me expand.

parkrun Headquarters are very clear to Event Directors to NOT use the word race anywhere (hence event director, not race director). As said on the previous page its a free weekly 5km timed runs. However, the Powerof10, which logs people's races run under a UKA License, some parkruns do have such a license and count on there as PBs, e.g. York. However, most don't have this UKA license but still get listed against your name on there (but don't count as a PB). This I find annoying because they won't let you add some races on there which may have a valid ARC license (the other type of valid road racing license). Can you tell I've ran most of my PBs on ARC licensed events :P

Parkrun is a race, anything else is semantic bollocks, why for example are they listed on Power of 10 but my lunchtime runs in work (of any speed or intent) aren't?

The Saint, you can class it whatever you want, but it isn't a planned to be a race, there are no medals, there are no t-shirts, there is no entry fee. It is a weekly time trial.

It is a race. Everyone goes off at the same time. TTs can have medals as well but they wouldn't be in race format.

Obviously there is some reason why the term race is not used but it isn't because it is different from a race.

If the organisers say it isn't race and it is a time trial, that will do me :-)

From the FAQ:

What is parkrun?
A.
parkrun is a not for profit organisation that helps to organise free weekly timed 5km runs around the country.

"In contrast to other types of races, athletes race alone since they are sent out in intervals (interval starts), as opposed to a mass start."
