I have realised that I need to do some core work, but I have a dodgy back (that will benefit from core work but I need not to disturb it) which means the exercise that everyone suggest - the plank - is out. Point me towards other beneficial exercises please

Sounds like you're in the same boat as me, I found Pilates very good and helped my back no end.

I stopped doing them though and am now back to square one.

I looked up some beginners pilates exercises on the net, haven't found anything brilliant but have been doing a few odd exercises.

If I find anything I'll post a link.

Hope you find something.

Thanks Becca, that's great. I need to run a few past my osteopath who can tell me what's good. She has recommended a Pilates teacher but it's not something I can fit into my time ATM..

Tomsmum, thanks for this thread... I have just been told by doctor that Pilates might be the thing that will help my back problems.. Haven't found anywhere local as yet and wondered if anyone had just bought a dvd or book and tried themselves at home. Help on any level would be much appreciated.

Plank on your knees? Bridge with legs on sofa for glutes and normal bridge for abs. Make sure you rise up fully, drop down slightly until your back disengages (put your hands on your back and tummy to feel this. Do 10 sets of 10 seconds and work up. When its too easy lift one leg

What MrRice said. Hal planks are a lot less strain on the back.

A good pilates instructor will give you instruction on grades of each exercise in a class. Unless it specifically says 'advanced' then it should be ok (in my limited experience). Advanced classes are mental though.
