A lot of my friends have done one or two marathons and some of them like Foxy, Plodding Hippo, Kaz etc for example are quite good and maintaining times throughout for their pace/time/limits. Others vary quite a lot, some people used to do good times and now are struggling in the 'quest for the vest'. They seem to not enjoy it anymore. Am I missing something here ? Am I off the mark ? I have noticed it more for non Fetchies 100 marathons is a great achievement but I think it shouldn't be rushed what do others think ? |

I've done 23 maras over the last 6 years. I'm no longer getting quicker but I am getting older. Getting quicker again will take a cure to my niggling foot injury and a change of mindset with regards to training and diet. I'm not sure either of those are likely in the short term. I'd like to get to 100 maras but doing 5-6 per year it will take a long time. I still enjoy the marathons, don't always enjoy the training. I have no interest in doing ultras, ironthings or triathlons. I'm not sure that answers your question? I'm just hanging out on the internet to avoid what I'm supposed to be doing. |

Lol I think that's fine mate I'm doing similar if I like a marathon I'll do it. I've done 29 over 10 years (3 DNF 1 Illness, 1Injury and 1 got lost and did 30 miles still didn't finish) But I 'try' and enjoy them as long as you are that's good. I just don't understand how someone who could do a 3 hour marathon is forcing themselves to do 5-6 hours for the vest. |

I think I'm up to 75 since 2009. I'm not chasing 100 and do the events that take my fancy. I don't run them all at the same level of effort. I've run a sub 3:30 but it would kill me to try that every time and I can quite happily plod round in 4:30 or whatever, just to run somewhere different and get a nice bit of bling. There will be one or two target marathons a year, mostly to gain a good Comrades starting pen and a GFA or Boston Qualifier, and I don't do other marathons in the few weeks leading up to those. I doubt that I will get to 100 before 2018. I'm not sure of the individuals that you are referring to but there are some who are carrying injuries I think. |

HoD, each to their own. My 'quest for the vest' was on my own terms. As in a race I wasn't in competition with anybody else. I suppose I hated putting so much into one target race trying to go sub-4 and failing it seemed natural (!) to try and get better at marathons (not necessarily in time terms, more recovery) by running loads. And recovery has improved, instead of trying to run one sub-4 I can probably run a few back-to-back. |

It's an interesting question then. I'd like to think I could get to 100 as long as I keep enjoying running the distance. But as it will take me another 16 years at my current rate, the chances are I will be getting a LOT slower. Will I still enjoy them if my time goes out to 5-6 hours instead of 4 hours? Dunno. Maybe I should just get a shift on and start doing 10-12 per year to get there before old age overtakes me.

I know you guys as you know I'd say if I thought it wasn't right but I think you do it about right if 'chasing' the 100. Even if people do one a week that's fine I believe if you can cope. But why would you want to put yourself though misery just to tot up another. We've all had tough marathons I've never had an easy one |
