I have -8 short sighted and have had glasses since 12yr old. I started needing longer arms to read about 6 or 7 years ago and went to varifocals and they have been great. I found looking out of the right bit of the lens easy and second nature now.

I wear contacts for exercise mostly and have a couple of pairs of cheap reading glasses that I use when I have contacts in.

My eyes do dry out more when reading or at a screen as I don't blink as much, I think this is common. Higher moisture content lenses may help.
Lenses do take time to get used to. When I started it was told to gradually increase use from 2 to 4 to 6 and then up to 14 hours gradually over 2 to 3 weeks. My eyes were desensitised by then and lenses were easier to put in.

Thanks again for the comments. It would have made sense to build up usage I forgot to put it in for shopping today, but if I can get other lenses without a tie in I’ll give it a 3months trial. If I have reusable ones I can try the slower daily build up.

I'm another with a freckle/mole/thingie somewhere in the periphery at the back of my eye. Vision Express found it when I was being tag teamed by a student and an experienced optician. Poor student had a good look around my eye, declared all was well, optician had a look, and was all "oh, you might want to take another look over there" like she was telling him off :)

An exciting trip to the eye hospital with dilating drops awaited me, too, but it seems like nowt to worry about. Eye hasn't fallen out yet, so all good...

I tend to wear my varifocal or PC glasses most of the time and wear contact lenses for sport, running or socialising. My eyes are -2.75 or -3.00 (I can't quite remember off hand) with a couple of floaters to boot.

I have had a split contact lens, scratched eye lens and lenses which went around the back of the eye and freaked out my family and friends, putting them off ever trying lenses. For some reason, it has never bothered me.

I (occassionally) wear contact lenses - like others, get eye test etc and then buy daily disposables online. My eyes also get a bit dry but can use the comfort eye drops you can buy (which are contact lens friendly)

I've been wearing contacts for over 30 years and get eye test from an optician, then order monthly lenses online.

I've also found my glasses are getting to 'strong' for me but my stupid optician seems hell bent on keeping them as strong as they can. I've been ordering slightly less strong contact lenses than I previously had and can read with them.

I have el cheapo reading glasses for reading with my contacts if I need help, though so long as the light is good enough I can read with contacts in. Later in the day, I'll take my contacts out and read without my glasses.

When I first started wearing lenses, my optician told me to start off wearing for a few hours at a time, just to get the eyes used to having something in them, then build up wearing time. Stay hydrated and if possible get well hydrated lenses...I've been on Air Optix Aqua for years now...as recommended by my optician. Good for people who work with computers and stare at screens for hours on end.

My optician recommended a spray from Boots - pretty sure it was this one but will double check boots.com - for dry eye days (and in particular for days sneakily wearing lenses a few hours too long for some ultramarathon or another - he was amusingly supportive of that idea)

Since there are a lot of experts here, perhaps someone can give me some advice. I've just been for my second contact lens fitting trial and gave up both times unable to get them out before getting my eyes sore. Any tips for newbies? I can make one more appointment to try a third and last time.

I managed to get one out for each of the appointments, but I just can't feel the lenses at all and can't figure out a technique. I can touch my eyeballs ok, but I'm just not grasping the lenses.
