South African Charne Bosman overtook defending champion Caroline Wostmann in the final few kilometres to win a thrilling 2016 women's Comrades. Wostmann, looking to defend her title from last year's 'up' run, ran into problems in the closing stages and was forced to walk.
Bosman, who had been as much as 11 minutes adrift at one stage, finished strongly and overtook an ailing Wostmann with 2km to go to the Kingsmead Stadium finish line.
To compound matters, Wostmann had a near miss with a motorbike following her.
Bosman finished in a time of 6:25.55.

Defending champion Caroline Wostmann was involved in a collision involving two motorbikes while in the lead in the finishing stages of the Comrades Marathon on Sunday morning.
From footage Wostmann can be seen striding very slightly to her left with one of the motorbikes that accompany the front runners with the support bikes driving close to her and trying to swerve as their paths crossed.
A second motorbike behind them also braked and fell sideways on to the ground. Wostmann, who runs for the KPMG team, paused slightly but carried on running, waving her hand in the air.
KPMG marketeing director Pierre Jacobs said he wasn't there but had seen pictures of it and a short clip on the news when a bike drove into the back of her.
Wostmann bravely carried on running, slowing down from time to time, with other runners passing her.
''She is cramping very badly and she is not a good space,'' said a worried Jacobs.

South Africa's David Gatebe has broken the 'down' record in this year's Comrades Marathon.
Gatebe stopped the clock in a time of 5:18.19, breaking Russian Leonid Shvetsov's 2007 record of 5:20.49.
Shvetsov has since been implicated in a doping scandal.
Gatebe, who won the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon in 2013, pocketed R1.14 million for his efforts - R400 000 for the victory, R400 000 for the new record, R190 000 for being the first South African home - and a bonus of R150 000* for being a South African winner.
Fellow South African Ludwick Mamabolo finished second in a time of 5:24.05, with another local runner Bongmusa Mthembu in third in 5:26.39.

bravedave: kept his seat on the bus for a 11:57 finish - good staying power
Slow Duck: went ahead for a 11:46 finish
Some trivia
record for most finishes = 45
Mr Holland (64y) and Massyn (65y) both finished their 44th consecutive runs today.
Another 56y old (soon 57) did his 40th. First one was days after his 18th birthday I think.
Will he aim for 50?
Someone that finished with 40s to spare was position 14366 out of 16778 starters, so about 14500 finishers.

Thanks Steady. Those motorbikes are a nuisance.

I ran with Mr Holland for a short while, very impressive chap.

I think the first person to miss the 12 hour cutoff was attempting to get his Green Number today, having 9 previous medals. Gutting.

Very nice conditions today.

Yes, although there is a lot of up in the down run, even in the last 35km or so, which look sharply downhill on the map.
