having given up competitive running about 3 months ago I have been maintaining 3-4 milers about 3-4 times per week mixed with cycling. However, 9 days ago I was in the last .25m of a 4 miler when I came through a gate on the canal on to a left 90 degree turn....as I started to take off I felt/heard a sharp click/crunch from what felt to be the back of my right knee. No real pain at the time but a bit discomfort. After a few hours it became swollen and a regular click from the knee when walking or putting weight on it. Since then I have spoken with the doc twice and this will be a 3 times come Monday. First doc was a bit clueless but prescribed Diclofenic with the words we will see if the clicking persists. I had to persuade him to list me for specialist consultation! Second contact with another Doc was over the phone and he was quite confident it was cartlage trouble and I have an appointemnt for him to visually inspect on Monday. Physio friend had a quick once over and again is quite confident it is cartlage but the extent would have to be diagnosed by an MRI.
Clicking is not painful but is quite noisy and irritating when walking for any extent. Knee becomes achey when walked on for a period of time.
Any similar stories and how it panned out for you?

Meniscal tear. MRI next, as you say.
Arthroscopic repair/shaving of the loose bit of cartilage if necessary.

The results are pretty good as far as I know.

My knees have always clicked

Have had 2 knee injuries, one on either side, each got better one with treatment one without as I had been told surgery and the MRI came back with a clean bill of health and told to 'crack' on.

Hope you dont need surgery although the suddent change may mean you do.

Take care
