Thank roberton. Yeah, exchange (swaps sounds like Saturday Swap Shop doesn't it?!)
Thanks, good tip. Makes sense, if you are ahead then you become proportionally more ahead. But near the beginning it said I'd missed a few but I would have then lost a bishop or knight and I'm never keen on that! G

I often work on the basis that I'll go for the exchange if -I'm ahead on pieces -the piece I will be taking is potentially annoying -it will get rid of their second knight or bishop but leave me with one of each
With too many pieces on the board I find it challenging to come up with a plan - so better to get rid of pieces on my terms...
Of course, I have no idea whether any of this is a good strategy or not!

Yeah I can second MisterTea on the decluttering the board and also getting rid of pesky pieces who are causing destruction. Normally a Knight.

I also look at how open the board is, if there's a lot of space I usually prefer to have Bishops, if it's cluttered I might prefer to have Knights. Another consideration is where my pawns are, if they're mainly on dark squares I might prefer to keep my light-squared bishop and look to exchange dark-squared bishops if I can.

That all makes much more sense - thank you all for explaining so clearly. Sometimes I make a conscious decision not to take a piece, but that would show as a missed win. Now all I need to do is cut out the Blunders

Sometimes your opp may have a very active piece - maybe a knight supported on e5 or d5 being a real pain, or a bishop with open diagonals. If you have an inactive bishop that’s quite blocked in, then it’s definitely worth trying to use it to swap off opp‘s active piece.
I’ll try & find a photo example later....

Missed win is only if you'd win a piece or the exchange, not if it's an equal swap and not if taking would lead to checkmate, etc.
I did have one in a live game yesterday that I need to review which on the face of it didn't look right and will need reviewing at a computer but they don't usually get that wrong.

Looking at game analysis, I play too defensively; I run away if a key piece appears to be at risk instead of a) noticing that they have protection or b) I can afford to lose it
There's so much to take in!

I’m the same GM. 25 moves in against DaddyShark and only 5 pieces have gone between us. In contrast after 13 moves Wingy and I had exchanged 9 pieces.

I think I’m fairly defensive. The early part of the game often shows I should have taken a pawn.
