Those that know me I'm not a stranger to this lost most of late 2009 and 2010 to this changed my running style never had a problem since.

However somehow raised it's ugly head again only a grade one tear alledged, I did XC last weekend and had massage on Monday but I think the damaged was there and 'speedwork' just one step too far.

Had a bit treatment on it but my guy in our clubwhos a sport injury masseur, said to roller it twice a day and use hot and cold therapy on it ?

Does this work new one on me ???

I've heard quite a few people talking about hot and cold therapy recently, not done it myself. Last year though for a small tear in my quad I was recommended heat therapy to bring more blood to the area to aid healing and it seemed to be beneficial. This link has more

The hot and cold thing is supposed to stimulate blood flow. I'm a believer. I've only had a "proper" calf tear. Limping for a week type injury. That is a month off running and not racing for another two or three after that. Mine healed fine and never reoccured

It was only a small tear, grade 1. I saw the fizz a week after it happened, had to do the heat thing each evening for a week. I think I just had to avoid anything other than an easy jog so as not to stress it and then returned to normal.

Looking back at my training log, I didn't stop training, I just didn't do anything to stress it, but it was my quad not my calf.

I'm really not convinced about rolling a tear. Rolling is good for loosening off tight muscles and releasing fascia. However to apply reasonably indeterminate pressure to an actual tear IMO is more likely to do more damage than benefit.

Definitely use heat on a tear to promote blood flow and aid recovery. Alternating with cold I've not seen any conclusive scientific evidence for.
