Well, I didn't get too pissed and even got a PB as well. I think I spoke to you beforehand Caterpillar (about barcodes, funnily enough). I'll introduce myself next time.
Only 47 more parkruns until I get myself a red shirt !

Wow!!! Well done SS! What did you think of the bar code system? Sorry we had a technical problem. We were going to have two laptops on manual and two on bar codes but one laptop died so it was back to plan A - two on bar codes and one manual.
The manual queue was huge!!! Sorry. With hindsight we should have had two laptops manual and one bar code from the start, but I swapped over to doing manual entry as soon as we'd done all the bar coders.
Despite apparently almost everyone putting their hand up at the start announcements to say they had got their bar code, it turns out that we still had about half the runners without bar codes at the finish.
Would love to know what the runners thought.

This silly runner didn't get round to printing and laminating her barcode, and it was the longest queue I've ever been in at parkrun! Didn't bother me though, my fault!

Don't be silly, it was entirely my fault. I had a nice chat with some other parkrunners in the queue.

So - question to Kirsty and SurreyStrider. What do you think we should do regarding barcode scanning? Assume we have three laptops for registration, and they can be set up for manual OR barcode entry but not both without a minute or so to switch over.
I think the bar code thing is here to stay. It reduces input errors brilliantly and makes life for the volunteers a hell of a lot easier. Should we encourage people to bring bar codes, offer to make and distribute bar code tags for people, or just let people make their own decision?
If we have a mixture (as we definitely will do for quite a while) how should we dsitribute the computers? I think we got the balance wrong on Saturday. I think we made Kirsty wait far too long, and gave a super VIP service to those that came with neat bar codes like SS.
What else do we need to do?
Ta!

Am trying to have a salient thought about it, but too excited and emotional about Funkin finishing his first ironman in the amazing time of 10.37.39.
Er, anyway.... if people don't do their barcodes surely that's their fault?! I think there will be a lot more next week. Tough luck if we have to queue really... If you're offering to print and laminate them, how about a donation towards parkrun or Bushy park from the recipient? I'd pay!

You will always get people turning up without barcodes. Either people who have forgotten them or newbies who don't know they exist. You can be sure that after standing in the non bar code queue yesterday people will turn up with one next time. The danger is when the majority start queuing for the barcode laptops you can cater for them otherwise you will end up with a situation akin to Tesco's where people switch between queues, depending on which one looks like it's moving quicker. If you are going to use barcodes then people need to see the benefit in them. Simples.
