Thanks UV. I tried the Gobi technique when he was pacing TMW. He said we were on course for a 19:30 time at about 1k. At 2k I was still just "in touch" with him, but at 2.5k he was a speck on the horizon. I managed 19:53 he managed 17:21. That was almost my worst - not that they vary by much. TMW also managed a spectacular Worst - even *I* left him wheezing and blue at 3k on that run. Has Gobi got any more pacing tips? BB - I usually do a bit of speed work, but now you mention it I actually haven't for some time. When I'm working up to a half marathon (like now) I usually mix in 900m "go like fcuk then jog back gasping for air a few times" with long runs (not Gobi-long but 10 miles plus) I did that this week and discovered I've lost a bit of raw speed but I'm not worrying about that very much. Good spot though. I also plan to get copy of this HRM guru book and see if I can break 19:30 for the BPTT. If it persuades me to get a HRM I'll do that and report back. I need to be convinced though. I think 70% of max for me (old git) is about 138 bpm. I get to that just reading an exciting e-mail. |

LOL Cat! That has me chuckling. I have a good idea for a strategy for breaking 19:30. You should try running at 19:30 pace for the first 4.95k, and then run the final 50m a little bit faster. Oh, and TMW had run an ultra the week before you breezed past him I've never considered HRM stuff - wouldn't know where to start |

Yes I know. 50k. Excellent stuff. I couldn't do it. But that was a week previously and he's young. I'd run almost 11 miles hard on Wednesday and I'm old, and Gobi did the same 50k. It was probably a mistake for him to chase Gobi a week after an Ultra, but he's young and the Dark Side is very seductive. It wasn't exactly a /breeze/ you understand. TMW is actually rather better than me normally (when he doesn't follow the Gobi technique:-) |

Gobi
Cat The pacing was spot on for an even paced run of 19:35. This assumes that for 4Ks you can cope at pace and then kick for the last K. Its not complicated just a very basic guide to how to run carefully and quicker over distance. PS. he also asked me to run it why else would I be running 3:55ks. Runners Balham Bouncer (+2 laps) Greg (going out for wedding anniversary tomorrow night so might be a bit worse for wear / not turn up at all) Non-Runners Andrew65 (yes to next sat though) Gobi (working) Vomit(no wheels) |
