Grep - straight handle bars = S type (S stands for sporty - they're slightly lower than the other handlebars and so you've got more lean and it's more aggressive).
M type is the classic (like on my green brommie), they are just fine I found too.
The "other " type (can't recall what it's called) is quite frankly weird. Weird to look at and weird to ride. Rach do you recall what type that is? i don't know what the point of those handlebars are. They're kinda curved upwards.

Yes, the weird seaweed looking bars are right out.
Do I only need two gears in B'cay then, Sarah?

If it's not hilly then 2 gears are fine. I find that on the three gear one the gear levers are bigger and more unsightly. With 2 speed they're smaller and neater on the handlebars

Sarah - If you were a man I'd call you gay for that comment
I have a 3-speed with the gears tuned up slightly (i.e. harder to push through). I spend most of my time in the first two gears, but the third is useful to get a bit of speed up.
I thought the "M" type was (as you say) the classic one, the "P" type has the drop handlebars and the "S" type has the straight handlebars.

"Gay" as in "is contemplating a flamingo pink Brompton", Rach?

Had an interesting conversation with MrsP this morning. Rather than "thou shalt not buy a Brompton" she simply stamped on a pink one (either pink) which is a shame.
Looking good for orange. Really rather excited, embarassingly.

GregP, No, gay as in a 2 speed is "smaller and neater on the handlebars". I'm function over prettiness, anytime
Orange is ok. Yellow I always think rather JCB-esque. "Raw laquer" is almost akin to riding a fixie in trendiness terms. I suspect they throw in a flat cap for free.

I've been riding the standard Brompton - M-type red - for 5 years+. It just does the job so well. Just go for the basic 2-3 speed. Worth getting the mud guards and the marathon tyres (v.difficult to get those tyres off so need to avoid the punctures).
