I swear and also try not puke when running on hills. I have some monsters to contend with on my LSR tomorrow. Well, monsters by West London standards...

I don't *do* hills, but have been working in a few ...erm... slopes in the first half of my LSRs - I had a look at the course elevation and it's a bit uppy & downy in the first half. Looks like a gradual slope down on the home straight I did a hilly 10 mile race last year. No swearing as such but got a mantra going of 'I'm not stopping' over and over in my head. By the time I got to the top of this massive hill it had morphed into catherine tate's Lauren: 'I. Aint. Stopping. Does my face look like it's stopping?' which seemed to pass the time. I'm supposed to be doing the FIRST training programme, which actually limits your runs to 1 interval, 1 tempo & 1 LSR per week, but I don't like it. Not enuff spontainaity, so I'm working more towards a weekend LSR, mid week 7 miler, couple of 5k tempos in between. Trying for 14 miles today all being well

Yay for Brighton Marathon training peeps, what a determined bunch you are My plan is the same as last year's which was the "marathons for non runners" - it is a four times/week plan that conectrates on your mental strength as much as anything, it has short/med/short/long as the four runs and builds distance over the training period. Power station bit I enjoyed in a weird way, bit I found hardest last year was the dog's leg after the 13/14 mile point where you go off the main parade and along for longer than seemed feasible and then back on yourself. |

Mulbs after the dog's leg, how long is it till you really feel you're in the home straight? The point you turn around on yourself I guess? I did VLM last year and hated the Isle of Dogs bit, but from the point that you pass Tower Bridge and start sailing down the embankment was SUCH a high

weeeelllll for me the dog's leg went of forever, once I was back on the main promenade I knew I was heading for the power station and to be fair to Brighton they did try to make a feature out of its grimness/industrial-feel I felt something of a relief to just be knuckling down to get through it and as there were not really crowds to speak of on that bit you got to concentrate on your own footfall and breathing and I think that did me good. It did take a while (but then I run VERY slowly) to get to the turnaround point, from then on it was marvelous. There is a very gentle downhill to get you to the finish and the last three miles were (again for me at any rate) phenomenal. I was never going to give in but it's that time where you know you are actaully doing it. And the support on the home straight (you know who you are) still bring tears to my eyes now! Whoop whoop

Lovely to know - thanks. That swell of self-pride is fricking awesome. I got all of a doo-dar when I saw a hoarding by Adidas saying something about every step being worth it... We run at the same speed - will keep an eye out for you. |

I had the best LSR today, I'm so fucking happy, 16.13 miles @ 9:56mm....I fucking *knew it* I KNOW I've got sub 10mm for my LSR's, my last two weekends had knocked my confidence a bit. I've chosen to ignore the fact the last two weekends had multiple hills in them and today was flatter than a flat thing. My 4:18 marathon is so close I can almost lick it. |

Hmm feeling slightly more confident now. Managed to accidently run the best part of 17 miles today (I thought the route was 15 at a push!) at 9.46 mm pace. If I hadn't have run/walke the last 2 or 3 miles that would have been pretty fast. Feeling like a bag of poo now though. I don't think I can feel my legs anymore! About Brighton, does anyone have an elevation profile from last year? I had heard from people that did it that the first 13 miles or so is mostly on an uphill gradient.... |

I will see if I can find my garmin thing map and gradient, but as I recall it the highest point is after 300 yards then downhill to the seafront. After that there is a drag up to the east along the front. It is uphill, but not steep, probably knocks 30s per mile off. ROund the farms a bit (flat) then downhill back to the town (at about half way) and flat from there on in. |
