Studiously ignoring the fact that entering this again was madness. As I've got to ask someone to pick my number up for me I've got to hope I don't have the nightmare getting there like I did this year. Long way to go to not be able to run!

Am quite impressed by the numerous "Hard work starts now" emails the organisers are sending me. Sure, the hard work they are promoting means you pay for their training sessions, or click through to their official nutritional partners and whatnot, but at least they are pointing out that you need to put some bloody work in

They are, but in most cases the hard work doesn't start until about Christmas.
Or have I totally forgotten how to train for one-off marathons?

Depends where you're starting from. A relative beginner would benefit from starting to build up to where they need to be to start a marathon training plan, surely. Maybe it's more base work than hard work, but it still highlights that you do need to train!

Good point. If you're starting from scratch then the next couple of months are pretty important to even get to the start of a 16-week plan.
I keep forgetting exactly what I was like in 2007. I should probably do some work with the beginners on a Friday.

As far as I am aware, the hard work never really stops.

I've been building up for 2 months (from very little due to illness) concerned that I'm not going to be ready to start marathon training proper in December :-/
I do think a lot of first timers who aren't regular runners or with a club think they don't need to start training until the schedules start. Hopefully Brighton's emails will catch a few of them and prevent a few injuries or dnfs.
Speaking of training, did speedwork with the club last night; my legs appear to have doubled in weight overnight! Off to the gym soon for a little row to loosen them off before core class.
