Stuffing can seriously impact your run if you are bloated, full and blocked up...That's why I get my carbs in via a powder/water solution instead of going the pasta/bread route. For one big run many years ago, I couldn't walk past a bakery a few days before without eating a cob or two haha |

I have been consciously cutting down the carbs over the past week, but only to maintain my weight. The toast / pasta / sweet potato fest starts properly on Thursday ![]() |

Oh yes, must remember my carb drink on Friday and Saturday, it definitely helps avoid the bloating MPH mentions.

Johnny - I heard that cutting down on protein is not so essential (I suppose it depends on how much protein you usually eat). Rather it would be better to cut down on fatty foods.

You are right, you don't need to cut down on protein, but if you are to eat more carbs without increasing total calorie intake you have to cut down on something else.

I dont carb load at all... just not convinced by the benefit for the possible risks of getting to the start line 4lbs over weight and bloated and sluggish!

Do it all to feel myself. Tapering the last two weeks, now this week, but eating the same Im told does it. As you have droped your milage but still taking on same carbs, just a thought. Rather be under carb loaded than over myself. Weather is looking fine, not bothered to much about the temp as the wind is so bloddy cold! Could do with a 6 mph wind rather than a 16 one if I was being picky, but, all good so far Id say.......... Work is draging, thats the only taper compliant I have..... |

I used to suffer awfully with gastric discomfort during races. Experimented with different drinks and gels, but even having found a gel which made it not so bad, I still wasn't happy. I also used to carb-load like an absolute loon! Packets of biscuits, full-fat soft drinks, crisps, the works... Then, before Hull marathon last year, I stopped the carb-loading. Just favoured a decent meal which contained carbs on the Saturday night. Ran the fastest marathon I had run in three years. Since then I haven't actively carb-loaded, only hit the wall once in my last dozen marathons. Sometimes I don't even eat breakfast on the morning of a race. I will graze a little on Saturday afternoon, eat Italian on saturday night, have a couple of beers on the evening and probably break fast, but I won't fill myself with carbs any more. |

That said, I have just eaten a "Boost" cake-bar. That is a thing of beauty! |
