Thanks LB and V'Rap. A big draw would be to come and watch your successes on your tenth day.

I'm very grateful when race organisers provide energy stuff. I certainly rely on it in races.
And as for Kendal Mint Cake - yippee! There's always an old pack of that stuff lurking in the bottom of my rucsacks- some of it must be 20 years old by now.

Thanks Lizzie W.
Ultracat, you are correct about the strict cut off times. I think the max time allowance for the Edin - N. Berwick is 3 hrs 30 mins but you have to be past certain points of the race by a certain time otherwise someone comes along in a van and just tells you you are out of the race! Can you believe that? Apparently you can still finish it - you just don't get a time/ medal whatever.

Could be worse - imaging running the Comrades Marathon (56m). The start time is 5.30am and the finish line closes sharp at 5.30pm - anyone who reaches the finish even a second after this time will have the cruel sight of the officials stopping the clock and turning their backs on them.

Curious how peoples perceptions differ - I'm sure I remember going up a hill at Abingdon, not once but twice. Mind you, I didn't have the best of races!

It's certainly true that people's perceptions of what does and does not constitute a hill varies with their own differing experience. To me, the only incline I remember from Abingdon was the bridge over the A34 - up here in the Lakes, that certainly does not constitute a hill (barely even an updulation) but I can imagine it being a big deal for somebody from, say, East Anglia. I also belive the route for Abingdon has been changed since I did it so there may be inclines now that weren't there in 2006.

Don't have a problem with cut-off times myself - the marshalls can't reasonably be expected to stay out on the course for ever and, in some cases, there are safety issues to be considered. For example, the organisers of the Garburn Trail Race (familiar to some on here) state that if a competitor has not made the start of the major climb by a fairly generous point then they will not be able to be supported to the finish. Given that this allows the marshalls at the top of the pass knowledge of the time they can expect to be coming down, I think its fair enough. As long as the rules are clear, I don't see a problem - we all havethe option of 'continue at your own risk' on public rights of way.

I don't have a problem with cut-off times ... apart from the viciously stringent cut-off time for getting to the Esk Hause checkpoint in the Great Langdale Fell Race. And that's only because I haven't a hope in hell of ever making it yet could easily complete the route before the pies were all eaten.

CumbriAndy - you mention you know the race director. Do you know if this race is any where close to being full yet? I'm thinking about entering (as my first FM), but first I want to see if I survive my first 21-mile race in 2 weeks time.
