The Rentboy
Hello everyone, thanks for making me welcome to this forum.

Running4Rwanda, Yes i enjoyed the Lasswade 10. Had no idea what to expect with this being my first 10 mile run. There were a few lung busting hills in the first half of the race but thankfully it levelled out for the second half. Final mile just seemed to go on forever!! Have you decided to do the Windermere now? :)
There is an Edinburgh to North Berwick 22 mile run on 2nd May. Thought i'd do this as a training run for the Brathay. This one is flat though. Any thoughts? Too much before Windermere??

Sounds an ideal run, Rentboy, especially if you don't run it too hard?

Perfect timing for a last LSR before Windermere :)

Still wavering. Have only just broached subject with OH - not a very good reaction. Apart from which, still not done any significant mileage - if I get a couple of LSR in the next couple of weeks, then I might be more positive.

Drove up to Ambleside at the w/e - even some of the undulations in the last few miles are hillier than I normally train on ;-)

The Rentboy I think the North Berwick 22 has a strick cut-off time, not sure what it is but I believe you need to be capable of a sub 4 hour marathon time to enter it.

I've just realised I have a chance at this one - I'm in the area that weekend for a "surprise" 40th. Mine. But not such a surprise...

I've yet to discuss with senior management though. I need to choose my time (and her mood) carefully.

It's only 3 weeks post FLM though, but I'm hoping I'll be recovered.

What are the practical arrangements: feeding stations, gels/ energy drinks, terrain, etc?

And - roughly how much faster / slower (!) than FLM course is it? Just for reference!

There are drink stations about every 3 miles
I think they have water and SIS

quite a few have Kendal Mint Cake

Terrain is "Cumbrian Undulations"

There are 2 steep but not particularly long hills at 7 and between 21 and 22 miles
There are about 3 other notable updulates.
I think if you are not used to undulating courses, then it's probably about 10 minutes slower as a 'raced' marathon than a flat course.
But that does depend on how well you run hills. The way the course runs, the steep hills are ascents, and the descents are almost all of a gradient that you can let gravity do the work, and not have to slow yourself down.

I have run the Windermere Marathon course as a training run faster (by a matter of seconds) than I have ever raced FLM. Does that help?

:P

Seriously, there is no reason why you shouldn't do Windermere three weeks after London. The profile is so different that you'll use completely different muscles for it :)

Dropping by to join the thread having decided to run this again.

I ran it in 2007 and worked a feed station last year - both were great experiences and I'd get involved even if I wasn't running. Since its only just up the road and I know the Race Director, it would be rude not to really.

I can't compare this to London (Haven't done it - don't want to) but will comment that my time here in 2007 was about quarter of an hour slower than I did at Abingdon (very, very flat) the previous autumn. I would have been quicker but I went off too fast and completely lost it on the climb out of Bowness - 21 miles. I'm treating this attempt as unfinished business!

Loving use of the word 'updulate' btw - 'downdulate' doesn't seem to have quite the same ring though.
