I've written lots about this, mainly on my blog, but also on the O 50s thread.

I high jump so obviously 'can' jump - but have a constant battle with the fear factor.

Keep losing posts - I'm on a train - might need to wait til I'm home.

Canute - typically! - gave me some great ideas and insights

Grep gives me too much credit, I've done box jumps, depth jumps, and other plyometrics before but wouldn't say I'm an expert.

The point of a box jumps is to reduce the impact of landing (otherwise you could just jump for height and measure), so (as Lizzie and WS suggested) I'd start with a height you know you can jump and build gradually as your jump improves. TBH I think you should be challenging the very limit of what you can jump very rarely (I presume you're doing a number of reps).

Are you jumping on to proper boxes or weight plates?

SPR and I have talked about this elsewhere off and on for years. My gym has recently got some of those semi-soft 'jumping onto' boxes (sure they have a proper name) - but they are massively high for me, so I'm still jumping on to aerobics steps.

I completely agree with SPR - put it this way: jumping to improve your running (and general fitness) is very differnt from jumping to improve your jumping!

Canute's advice to me is more about high jumping than box jumping - but the information about the fear factor is relevant and very interesting so I make no apols for linking it again:

Thanks Greg.

BTW probsbly obvious but 'FF' stands for Fosbury Flop - the technique high jumpers now use for clearing a high bar. I do too. And for anyone thikng they are too old to learn how to jump I was 54 before I ever even attempted high jumping.

I'm 54 but it's a long way down on my list of things to learn. SUP is next - I've got a course next month having enjoyed a taster session at Centre Parcs.
