Box Jumps

I have weekly personal training session once a week, with around half the session being strength-based (deadlifts, squats, etc), and the other half being power-based. We've just started to introduce box jumps, and I am struggling! I think a lot of it's in my head, and I find myself hesitating before each jump.

Does anyone have any tips for box jumps?!

SPR is your man if he's about. You have my sympathies though.

I'm a sporadic follower of the excellent NROL4L which advocates box jumps. I'm acutely conscious that if I mess them up it's a straight route to Injury Central.

Yeah the hesitate thing is me too bit then when I do it I clear the height with room to spare

I'm going to watch this thread - box jumps are a big no-no for me mentally. I have far too vivid a picture of smacking my face on the box :-(

It's not the smacking my face I worry about - it's my shins. I think. Possibly.

Can you practice clearing the height with mini/micro hurdles? I know it doesnt land you on the box, but gives you confidence in the jump itself.

I dont do box jumps, but to do in the air tuck jumps (alongside backwards single leg jumps and all sorts of other plyos from Athletics 365):

Start Small, you can even start with step ups first, and by small really small.

My PT tried getting me to try gradually by stacking up the disc weights and adding another one each time - it worked at the time, then I didn't do any for months and need to start from scratch again

Well, I told Pt this morning that I needed to conquer box jumps.
We did the stacking plates thing as part of a circuit - I was fairly OK with 16 inches at the end.
I also made the mistake of telling him I need to be able to put socks on wet feet without sitting down - many, many single leg squats later.............
