Finished it. Enjoyed it. Exciting story, sufficiently unexpected events (especially the ending) to keep me panting along with it. Nevertheless, I shan't re-read, and probably shan't look to read any other Daphne du Maurier. |

Really enjoyed this one. The story kept a nice pace but had sufficient description to paint the picture. Knowing the area probably helped though!

Finished this on the tube home this evening. I didn't enjoy this as much as her other books, it was a bit too melodramatic and overwrought for me. It was still a good book, just not up there with Rebecca. I liked the descriptions of the countryside and Mary was a good character but a couple of plot points didn't make sense which distracted me. I wasn't sure if I had read this book before but I think in the end I hadn't. I think it might have been Frenchman's Creek which has a slightly similar story. Maybe I'll reread this one at some point. I gave this book a 6. |

It was old school. Lacked some of the class of a Jane Eyre or Woman in White but still easy to shunt through in one sitting I think I'll give it 7 for its restful escapism

Thanks for your reviews just finished it tonight even though I chose it. Though it took me a while shouldn't detract from the book I did like it, an author who I will read again. I purposely didn't chose Rebecca which was one of my first thoughts wanted something less obvious but still well known My copy says it was first published in 1936 but found it still readable on a language point of view good story kept me gripped and I will probably read it again in a few years I'll give it an 8 |
