I tell you what, he's got a nasty bit to contend with now: as you come to the gate that marks the fell/woodland boundary, the remaining descent is all on steeply pitched stone and is really hard on the legs. It will be murder on legs that have done around 100 miles already.

Looking at the map it seemed an obvious line to look at. The descent is steep whichever way you go, so you might as well go the shortest route that avoids big crags if there some unmapped obstacle like bracken.

NE I think Paul should have the better part of an hour of his buffer left at Buttermere. Which if he cuts his scheduled rest a bit as well gives him a decent leeway to make it home by 7.

That was a more reasonable estimate FF. Am told that it's awful on the tops and chucking it down. He's coming off the last summit anyway and has about 1:40 to make it to Keswick.
