Cheers guys. My specific work on the route will be every 3rd week (as dictated by work) but there should be an extra couple of weekends when I'm available to get out for a couple of extra days up there. I have Calder Valley sessions to be able to get an hour or so on the fells on an evening when it ties in with work etc. I also have a 10 mile lumpy trail run on my back door that I've started doing by headtorch on an evening. I honestly don't think I'll ever be able to do enough training for this, just as long as I get the quality right then I should be fine. Maybe work on my descending a bit. It's far better than it used to be, but still a weakness. Climbing has always been a strength of mine. |

Dave, for the bgr its about being able to descend smoothly and with the minimum of effort rather than particularly quickly. That way your quads end up doing less work and consequently last longer it definitely comes with practice. The difference in my efficiency on the fell around the time of my BG, compared to normal, really hit home when I was doing support last summer and it was all down to time on the fells. [a friend who also completed in 2009 made a similar observation about himself when we were doing support together last year]. If you can't get to the Lakes find the longest descent possible (remember several on the BG are of the order of 20-30 minutes continuous descent) and just use it as often as possible, trying to get good at flowing down it with the minimum of stress on your legs.

I did notice a difference when I was out last week with Paul Jackson. On my 1st supports I had mashed thighs, even after 1 leg. To be honest on Rich Gilberts round I felt my thighs getting mashed coming off Calva. Over the next 2 supports, things felt a lot better, but we were moving faster on two of them than we had been doing with Rich and I felt a lot more comfortable moving that bit faster. After the run out with Paul, I had some leg ache from the running, but nothing like as bad as I'd had in the past. The last support I did was Jim Mann and Clive King. AFter doing the parachute at my own pace because of very bad shoe choice, my legs felt pretty good the next day for the high speed leg 4 we did. Although I didn't know it was going to be that high speed until we topped Yewbarrow in under 39 minutes! But, practice makes perfect

A few weekends I'm hoping to be around the Lakes 12/13 March(although work have just tried to cancel a rest day on the Saturday on me, so hoping that one of the lads willl be able to do a swap) 26/27 March 2/3 April 23/24 April (I may be able to extand my stay a couple of days upto Wednesday during Easter week.) 30 April/1st May 14/15 May (possibly an extended support if Clive King has anither attempt) This will be my last really big weekend I think. 4/5 June (Will be either in or starting a taper two weeks out so might just have a couple of short, race pace, sections rather than full days) I think I may have a bit of leave to play around with so should be able to make a couple more weekends if I play it right. |

A couple of midweek attempts all being well, but they'll more likely be last minute things than pre arranged stuff.

Change of plans. Rest day over weekend of 12/13 March has been cancelled and at the moment I can't get a swap. Won't be recceing that weekend. 26/27 March is a possible replacement as is 2/3 April.

I should be okay to make either of those weekends, let me know when you firm up your plans.

If anyone can get away during the week, looks like a few of us could be heading up for a leg 2 recce sometime around the 22nd/23rd of this month.
