Molesy - yes - the 11speed has different geometry and isn't compatible with the 10speed derailleur

Everything is difficult to get at the moment - but I am finding it OK to source 10 speed kit when I need it. (Not that I've needed it to since I ditched V'rap's Campag sh1te for Shimano)

NE - not that much faffing tbh - the main thing was getting the chain length right!!

Mmmm. I've got an 11 - 28 ten speed on my Trek (6700 kit) and that has a short cage. This has tempted me try and find a 11 - 30 rear cassette

On the basis that the HG62 is 139g lighter than the HG500 I've fitted that. 70K planned for tomorrow so it'll be interesting to see how it goes.

Guys/el Bee!, further to the recent discussion on rear mechs/max cassette sizes, can I please pick your brains a bit? From what I've been able to research, it's definitely a NO using a short cage Shimano derailleur if it's on the new(ish) "shadow mount" build, so that means R8000/R7000 (Ultegra/105 11 speed), however as eB suggested, some people have been able to use a 32 tooth cassette using a 5700/6700 rear mech. So how to do this? I want to fit a 32 on my 6700-equipped Trek, but I'm damned if I can work out how ...... it's definitely a short cage mech (57mm between centres), the picture below shows it fitted with an 11 - 28 and as you can see, there ain't much clearance between the upper jockey wheel and the cassette.

With a 32, it would foul for certain without some serious adjustment of the B screw - is that one of the things you have to do? It's suggested on the forum (link below), but it would leave the chain without much tension on the smallest rings wouldn't it? I've read that a derailleur extender can fix this, has anyone any experience of these?

I'm far from being an expert and I certainly don't understand all the Shimano model variants but it looks as though by converting your SS to a GS by replacing the cage and the addition of an extended hanger you could go all the way to 11-40.

Well, I don't really want to replace the rear mech if I'm honest ..... silver 6700 is really hard to come by nowadays. The hanger is an option, but I'd much rather do neither if I don't have to :-)

I do have a newish bike with a GS R8000 rear mech and an 11 - 32 so that could be the "hilly territory" bike, the trouble is it's all hills around here :-)

I don't think you need to replace the whole mech, just the two side plates.

The side plate that fixes to the body of the derailleur is a bugger to put back on if you remove it. Can be done but relocating that spring is the devil's own job.

NE, this is my set up on my solo bike
I actually have a 50/36 front which isn't supposed to work either, but I like it a lot!
My B screw is quite a long way in as you can see
