The ballot ("lottery") has just opened for Berlin Marathon 2018 single runner places. I've entered. Fingers crossed, although won't know until the end of November.

Anyone else given it a go?

I'm in. I have signed up with Prostate Cancer UK. They charge a surprisingly low registration fee of £20 in return for a pledge to raise a minimum of £500 for them.

This will be my fourth Berlin Marathon. I ran in 2011 and 2012, before there was a ballot for places, and in 2016, when I also ran for Prostate Cancer UK.

I think that most UK charities offer the same package for Berlin (ie £20 registration fee and £500 fundraising commitment). We at the Spinal Injuries Association certainly do.

However, this time around, I'd like to keep my running separate from my work - hence the ballot entry.

Very annoyingly they have switched from allowing Fast runner time from 2015. Have just entered the general ballot and if I don't get in will sign up with a travel company as I'm definitely running in 2018 after this years injuries woes.

Travel companies are expensive though, especially as they'll include at least £100 for race entry fee, etc, etc.

With UK charity places, you effectively pay just £20 for race entry. Plus, you have total freedom in all respects. Raising £500 sponsorship is a doddle.

I'm hoping to do Berlin again in 2018 - I've already booked flights and hotel! I did it this year...as a hot-dog (for a Guinness World Record 😂) but really want to be fit enough to run it for a PB attempt.

Jovi Runner - until they opened the entries, they said Fast Runner times would count from 2015 - that's why I booked flights before the ballot. They did have a clause that said times were 'subject to change' but I've chanced my arm and emailed them with a picture of the old web-page, asking them to be nice to me...

I wouldn't be able to raise £500. I have found one of the official race partners appears to do a race entry option only which is not that much more than just the regular entry so will probably go for that if I don't get in the ballott as I can risk having to make up £400 shortfall in a charity place

Pipes - let me know how you get on as I did the same & booked hotel. I Did email them & they said 'tough luck' in summary but if you have the cached page they might accept it. Its very annoying!

I'm curious about Berlin the place, I've never been, so I think I might give the ballot a shot, started watching this thread (I'm just 3 minutes too slow for a Fast Runner place - those age bands are wide!)

Oranj - This year's race was mine & OH first visit to Berlin or even Germany. We really enjoyed it. Loads yo do & see & lots more to for back for in 2018 that we didn't get a chance to visit. Definitely recommend it as a great city to visit.
