In theory if it was completely random they could in theory end up with everyone finishing at the same time which logisitcally wouldnt work so I am guessing there will be some element of selection built into the selection. Anecdotally that certainly seems to happen for other big events GNR etc).

Scott S Sep 2013 1:08pm, 30 Sep 2013 717 posts	0 Scott S They do get a lot of people finishing around the 4 hr mark anyway. I did it a while ago an a minute or so either side of 4hrs had a good spread of a few 1000 runners i.e 3h59:00 6000th place and 4:01:00 12000 place.
