When I mentioned I run/cycle/gym the doctor said I wouldn't be able to do any of these in case the monitor 'came off'. He also told me I couldn't shower during this period. Logically I would have thought stress-testing would be the way to go. I never even got round to discussing how the sticky pads bring me out in a rash if I have them on over 24 hours. Tbh I'm very disappointed in my hospital, they don't seem interested in talking it through with me at all. Every time I go I come away with a mixture of bemusement and anger.

My hospital gave me several sets of replacement pads (so that I could have a shower, along with a recording sheet for me to fill in so that they knew when the monitor wasn't taking readings (and my heart hadn't just stopped for half an hour ;)). They also asked me to record when I was running/exercising. Where are you based Alan?

Wellington near Telford, Shropshire. Nearest hospital 1.5 miles away, nearest heart specialists, New Cross Wolvo. I'm going to mention all of this on Wednesday when I go, see what happens. I'll report back :)

Da Big Guy
Hi all... so it's just 3 months since my ablation and all is still fine. I can still run hard with no flutter or fib. The 5-day test is interesting as I wondered how they knew if I had been cured ( I think I have) and this test seems logical.

And Alan - the lack of interest is something I have had a bit and it doesn't surprise me. I've also had that feeling (esp with my pacemaker stuff and checks) that I don't think they are used to dealing with people who are very fit and therefore not used to the way they think or indeed the bodies they are having to deal with.

Good luck Weds.

good news Big Guy.

I think the "local" hospitals are more concerned with heart attacks, weight related heart issues etc to take a specific intereset in AF.

The regional cardio centres though usually have someone who is a specialist in AF and its treatment/monitoring and usually they have a BHF funded AF specialist nurse.

Give them hell on Weds.......:):)

Thanks for the kind messages! Hehe we'll see. It'll probably be a case of 'come in take shirt off, stick stick stick, now go away' I have a feeling it's just the nurses I'll be seeing. But you never know. It's all learning for me. I'll let you know what happens. I'm more concerned with getting on to the hospital car park at the moment 😆😆

Ooh sorry - not been back for a while, Its all gone so quickly!
Yeah it was all very dull, I didn't see any doctors, I was done on the Wednesday, it came off on the Monday after. I had a fairly quiet few days too, though I was aware of the monitor at bed time. I had lots of extra sticky pads - and they were cool about me taking it off at shower time and, if I wanted, they would have been ok with me exercising with it on, though the £1500 disclaimer I had to sign before I left the hospital sort of put me off (I'm very clumsy!!) Seems the doctor I saw in November didn't really know what he was on about (no surprises there, though it was a generally poor experience and I did leave feedback).
I rang up hospital last week to see what was happening - and they said they hadn't had the analysis results yet - so no surprises there either. It'll be a week tomorrow now before I find out.

Since the monitor came off, I've been fairly active with a few parkruns and other stuff, though I am having to fit it in with my new job which brings the stresses all new jobs bring. I've never been so tired. My running times have come down marginally though, miles have gone up a bit too with no real ill-effects. I do get the odd 2-3 second episode of erratic beats but nothing major. I'm spotting little food and drink things that spark a few of these little episodes and I avoid them where possible, or I try and control my intake. Everything in moderation.
Obviously I don't know what's in the report, and that remains a little bit of a worry, but I cant do anything about it.

So, I managed to get my 'long run' up to 10 miles today. This is a big step. I wasn't fast, but there was plenty of 'time on my feet' !! During the run I was aware that my heart was working hard but overall it was ok - though I was glad to finish. I'm tired now though :-)

w-e-e-ell my cardioversion lasted nearly a year before my heart tripped back into AF a few weeks ago (booo!)- it "righted" itself after 6 days though (hurrah!), but I can't go on like that, so will be having an ablation this Friday which hopefully will sort it out PERMANENTLY!

Sorry to hear that Daz. I'm now 2 years post ablation and am medication free and AF free (touches all the wood I can see).

I can run and exercise all I want (still very slow but gradually improving - doubt I'll ever be back to previous levels). Good luck and let us know how it goes.
