Are phone apps accurate when mapping runs?

I do think that apps tend to under report distance (because they smooth odd jumps in the trace and htus cut corners) which would actually make pace per mile slower because the time would be constant. She's lying. Best way to test. Get her to a parkrun for a smack down ![]() |

Also depends on the particular phone - the position of the GPS antenna inside the case can make a large difference to accuracy.

I've been using a free app from Samsung on my phone, solely because they donate a quid to charity for every mile run. I've also been taking my Garmin with me as usual. The app always comes out as me having run faster and longer, from around 10% variation on a straightish out and back route, up to 25% on a twisty turny one. Garmin is definitely much more accurate. |

That app isnt smoothing enough ![]() My Garmin does tend towards a slight under reporting, which is interesting when in races if I am massively over the distance - means I've been off the racing line! |
