I've been in hospital the last couple of nights, they've let me out for the night to get some sleep at home and am back tomorrow. I've got an irregular heart beat and it looks like I'll be having electric shock treatment in 2 months to get the heart beating normally, after loading my body up with warfarin to thin the blood.

There's still a few tests to be done, however I'm feeling very positive and am glad it's been discovered now so it can be sorted.

They've said I can run, and it shouldn't be a problem but I guess I'm a little nervous about starting running again. I've had a lung infection which is how they found the heart problem. As soon as the lung issue is cleared I plan to start running again.

So, anyone had any experience of this or know anyone who has? Cheers! :-)

Not personally, but lots of experience in treating this conditions and know quite a few runners who have it
basically
your heart does not work as effciently with an irregular heartbeat, and often its too fast at rest, which can make exercise difficult

so , you might be more breathless

you might go back into a normal heart rythym on your own once the lung infection has cleared, or you might not

i am assuming you are on warfarin, and that they have, or will be scanning your heart to look for underlying a anatomical reasons for the irregualr heart beat

are you on anything to slow the heart rate down, sometimes that can make running more difficult,

f mail if you want

Thanks PH, much appreciated. I started on warfarin today. My heartrate is pretty low, they don't understand why it's happened so may remain a mystery. I'll defo give you a shout if I think of anything to ask when I'm not in hospital. Cheers. :-)

Kieren
Kind of.

My right ventricle beats in the wrong order. Apparently it's quite common and it hasn't affected me or required ant corrective treatment thankfully.

When it was found it was incorrectly diagnosed as ARVC / hypertrpohic cardiomyopathy which has a blanket term of sudden death syndrome. I had to wait a few months for tests which was very stressful but thankfully got the all clear. My heart was larger than average like most runners or anyone that does regular cardio and the irregular hear beat just means that my heart doesn't clear blood as effectively as it should but I still seem to be able to push myself hard in exercise.

I hope it turns out well for you. If it's okay with the Dr, I would definitely run - if only to reduce your stress. For as much moaning as there is about the NHS, I have total faith in the heart specialists here. You're in good hands. Good luck & get well soon

Cheers runner duck :-)

Kieren, that sounds frightening - glad it got correctly diagnosed in the end. Really useful, so thanks for the reply.

Up again, and off for more tests today.

Again sort of.

I got bitten by a venomous snake whilst on holiday and my central nervous sytem got majorly screwed up. As a result my heart sometimes doesn't know if its coming or going. Its mostly controlled by medication now, but I've lost a lot of confidence. I don't go running as much as I used to, and I don't go far from home when I do (I live in a remote area). I haven't competed for over a year, mostly because I dont want someone else to have responsibility for me if it all went horribly wrong.

For the record the venom also stopped my pituatry gland from working, and my body stopped making testosterone. More meds. I must be the first male on here to own up to being on HRT :-)
