Followed it up with a can of Hoegaarden 0.0 which was not nearly so pleasant. I don't think the yeast (Hefe) / wheat (Weizen) beers work very well as NA. Could it be because the alc version is already slightly sweeter than a "dry" lager and hence when you go NA which often seem to be sweeter anyway, it just accentuates it?

Actually, it's generally the wheat beers that I prefer as AF options (e.g. Erdinger, Franziskaner etc). It's the "normal" lagers and ales that struggle a bit more to please my palate.

OK, I'm gonna get all yeast on your a*ses here! I think that the Wit bit of White beers is same as the Hefe bit in German beers - caused by leaving the yeast in. It's yummy, but slightly sweet. Maybe I misled with the Weizen (Wheat) bit - there are clear wheat beers (Klares, or Kristall) which are drier. (There are also Dunkel Weizenbiers, which are more stouty, but let's not go there!) That's what I meant.  G

I find Erdinger AF way too sweet. Hoegaarden is often served with lemon isn't it? Maybe that would tone down the sweetness a bit. Still on Brewdog here. |

Aha, I'm now learning something!! Definitely, though, for me the Hoegaarden 0.0 didn't have the sharpness that the "full" version does, and I don't think I've ever had it served with lemon (though that might just be the quality of the venues I've consumed it in!) |

I gave up on hoegaarden ⁰ because of the sweetness. That's what put me off the moretti too.
