I have a marathon coming up on the 18th of October and I am thinking I might need a bit of sports massage just to get rid a few knots/general maintenance. I do roll a couple of times a week - especially after longer runs, but I thought it might be good to have a good massage to really get into the muscle fibres. Thing is, I've seen somewhere (can't remember where) that it's not a good idea to have sports massage too close before a race so I was thinking maybe two weeks before. Does anyone have any tips/advice about this? Any help appreciated.

That would be fine and it's a good idea. The advice really relates to deep massage in the days leading up to the race. Even in the days leading up to the race a massage can be scheduled provided it is not a deep one - a skilled masseur will know what is appropriate.

Thanks - excuse my ignorance, so when you say "deep", is that the same as a sports massage specifically?

You wouldn't want a deep tissue sports massage in the last 2 days before an A race, but my understanding is you can go a lot later than 2 weeks out.

My masseuse recommends, and I normally have one, the Wednesday before a Sunday race. It's sort of equivalent to a hard run, so after 3 or so days should all be perfect for race day.

If in any doubt though best to have it earlier than later - ask your masseur/masseuse, if they are properly qualified they should be telling you.

I usually advise no later than the Tuesday before a Sunday race and maybe a bit longer if you haven't had a massage before.

Look for a Sports Massage Therapist with level 4 or 5 btec, or a Physio with a good sports massage qualification. Make sure they know it's your first massage and that you have an event.

Hope it goes well. :-)

Thanks for all the advice guys. She is a properly qualified one who helped sort out my hammy a couple of years ago and she also works for local sports clubs. I will give her a bell. It looks as if 4- 7 days before the race looks reasonable but I will ask her.

cheers.

Sports massage can be deep, but isn't always.
