I’ve been working out at my local park for a couple of years now. Several of my friends and I have developed a habit of visiting the “bars” as we collectively call them every other day after work for a workout session. We’ve worked out regularly over the last couple of years and have all achieved an enviable level of fitness where we can exercise for almost an hour and a half with minimal breaks and not even break a sweat.

However, one thing has bothered me for a while. Every now and then, a local “poser” will show up at the bars, as if to join us in working out (we’re regulars so everyone pretty much knows us). I specifically say “posers” because they’ll arrive, do 5-10 pull ups where you lift your entire body over the pull up bar (a sort of dip position on top of the bar) and then leave. Other than trying to impress themselves, we see no point in doing stuff like that. But, I’ve always been curious about the name of this specific type of pull up.

Now, keep in mind, I work at an online casino ( pokiepop.org ) and we get clients from all walks of life, backgrounds, and native languages. So, I’m used to hearing many different words for the same term or expression, but I’ve seen some people refer to these pull ups as absolute/Russian/Bulgarian pull ups. Can anyone shed some light on the real “official” name and where these nicknames come from? Thanks!

Bizarrely I've heard of Bulgarian (or split) squats before.

Muscle Ups are a crossfit thing, crossfit being a mixture of Olympic weightlifting, gymnastics and running/cycling all HIT based. A muscle Up being part of a progression in the gymnastics.
