indeed aka is right. Unless you are intent on steaming through water stations looking for a 10 minute pb then you loose little by walking for 20 or so paces.

I beleive it cost me about 45 mins at FLM07. COuld have been the scrappy training, glucose deficiency and over ambitious early pace, but I am pretty sure it was the cups.

cat pigeons etc.
I ran a 2.51 in Cardiff stopping/walking through some of the water stations. I believe that by doing this I actually made time as I was better hydrated.
I did the same in a 50km race at the weekend and broke the course record.

I was just thinking today that I'll stop and make sure I take on water properly. The amount of times you see people grab, chuck it all over their head and then carry on without the drink...

I would have to stop completely to drink from a cup - and my aim and object for this mara is to keep moving at least at a slow jog at all times to stop me giving myself permission to wimp out.
I KNOW I wouldn't lose much time - but the whole marathon thing is scary enough without worrying about drinking! And if I can carry a bottle and manage the race better that way (and not stress myself out) then thats what I'll do.
Horses for courses and all that.
I know its not what proper affletes do - but I'm not a proper afflete - just looking to survive

I'm getting stressed just thinking about it - so I'm going to have to beg to differ from you all. I know you mean well, but sometimes its just better to go with what you know. Even if its 'wrong'.

Treacle, you defo have to go with what YOU think is the right approach - I did not intend to say that you should do the stopping and drinking thing, just that that was what I will be doing... only you can know what is right for you

For what it is worth, I walked through every water station in my first marathon (FLM07) I did n't see it as wimpinig out, just a good way to get water on board without getting cramps or a sticth.
