@RhB - 100% Agree, FUNdamentals first....you can 'coach' the basic skills through games. I used to coach kids, designed and implemented an appropriate kids section for running clubs using Athletics 365, as well as presented on Athletics 365 in Running Clubs at the launch of the UKA uShare initiative back in 2013.

We work through Fundamentals first, then foundation, not event specific until they get to 12 as a minimum, ideally 14-16 year old.

@HoD - I can ping over some resources if you want? Just send me an fMail or ping me on fB and I'll happily send some stuff over that may be useful for you.

and in other 'coach' type news...

I've just agreed to be the Team Manager for the England team at the Granollers Half-Marathon in Barcelona. The team hasn't been formally announced yet so I can't say anymore than "We're looking to take a strong team of 4 men and 4 women".

This complements nicely my England Team Manager duties for the Anglo Celtic Plate, and my England Team Coach duties for the Age Group Marathon Champs.

I'm heading over to Barton upon Humber this evening to deliver their 3rd and final Club Run session. Tonight I'm working with the new runner / social runner group. The plan is to do a group jog, with a mixture of running and strength exercises.

Speaking with the run leaders and coaches two weeks ago the group will normally do a slow 30 minute jog, so we're going to add in strength based group exercises every 5 mins. The aim is to embed the idea that strength training is a vital part of athletic development for new runners.

Sounds interesting - I have done some introductory strength sessions with my new runners after a run. I quite like doing things mid run - but some people are very stubborn about 'just running'!

So hot on the heals the position of England Team Manager for the Granollers Half Marathon in February, today I have been offered, and accepted, the role of "England Regional Coach Lead for Endurance (North)".

Andi Drake is standing down to focus on his Leeds Endurance Hub duties, and England Athletics approached me last night to see if I would be interested in the role. I've had a very productive conversation with Spencer this morning, and following on from that I have formally agreed to take the role on.!
