The mile is my best, I doubt I will ever hit 70% for anything longer than 10k.

Is it to with the way we train that we're suited to shorter distances? Most of us have done and trained for marathons, haven't we? Or are elites just rubbish at 5K, compared to us? G |

4k to 10 miles is my sweet spot, with sprint distances being laughable and longer distances hit and miss.

I used to propose this over on 3:15 thread, that as recreational marathon runners, our very best and longest and hardest training is probably more like an elite or good club runner's 5k or 10k training. It's way short of what an elite marathon runner does in terms of volume, distance and total training. So that was my theory! G

I agree with HG's theory 100%! Applies for shorter and longer distances which require more specificity. Also the time gaps make things look closer too - 20-30s for a few %age gains on a 5k looks easier to achieve than 3-4 minutes on a marathon. |

I know weather affects a 5k but it affects a marathon much more because of the distance. I also agree with the limited training for the longer distances. |

I still think that, in general, WAVA scores are a very good indicator of the distances an individual is best suited to. There are some people who are alarmingly good right across the board - Mrs Jigs for instance. But she and I have discussed it and although she can run a well above average 100m her scores get quite markedly better and better right up to the marathon - her 'best' event. |

My scores go in the opposite direction. With no training whatsoever - and I did NO athletics at school - the first 100 metres I ever ran was already well into the 70%s and the best I could do at 5ks and 10ks was lowish 60%s. I HAD trained and worked very hard for those.

Yeah, jda is another one over in sub 3 and sub 3:15 marathon world, whose relative performances are better at longer distances. Not many though. G
