Strength is definitely more important than flexibility. I'm speaking as a very bendy person but you really don't need more than functional flexibility.
I was interested to discover that stride length is more about strength than flexibility. FACT! No, really, it is.
Here you go: An effective stride length is generated by applying a force into the ground (pushing off the ground) and propelling the athlete forward rather than reaching forward with the legs in an attempt to pull the athlete forward. The force producing capacities of the athlete are fundamental to achieving optimal stride and length and maximal speed.

I've often wondered which way cause and effect goes (and what the variables are, too). Am I hetting slower because my sytide is hetter shorter as I get older. Is my stride getting shorter because I'm losing muscle strength with age. Or am I losing miscle strength because I'm conenting myself with a shuffle?

Ultra ChristmasTT: "Also enduring discomfort and pain, doesn’t sell it very well does it 😂".
It ought to, because it applies in so many areas of life. I suspect that it does, or could, if it weren't for so many siren voices promoting comfort and pleasure. Interesting discussion, strength vs. fleibility. I have heard it said before (strength more important as people get older) but not seen the analysis of stride length in relation to strength.

I certainly need to build more strength, especially my upper body.
I had a very pleasing med long run of 7.5 miles today but need to slow it down for the moment.

I shall try and report back on my progress with strength training and also stride length as a kind of experiment. My new watch/ app gives stride length, now it may or may not be accurate but will show up if there is a difference over time. With increased strength I’m expecting more speed of course. I’m going to take recovery on a feeling basis rather than a set period, that means I’ll rest longer if I feel the need .

I met with the PT this morning. I’ve agreed to do exactly what she tells me, initially for three months, with a review after that. She was lovely, not at all scary, and is going to help me with nutrition and sleep as well as strength and conditioning. A whole package. I’m excited to get started now! I’m having a baseline assessment on Friday for flexibility and mobility (I’m stiff as an ironing board and almost as immobile) so she’s expecting to have some work to do
