Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Not my intention but I had to join in with a group of 11-15 year olds today and their coach. The coach wanted them to share the high jump with me. It was either that or give up so I joined in.

It's not so much humiliation as self consciousness, it puts me off! Turned out alright in the end, I just needed to focus - I jumped 1.01 which is better than anything since 2017, and gets me a 78.3% wava score. I was really pleased with it and know I can do better in the summer. AND I turn 69 in less than a month...

Long jump went reasonably well afterwards- I'm working on getting used to my new run-up. I hit the board and was jumping around 3 metres, which was ok after a lot of mentals as well as physical on the HJ.

Finished with a quick ten minutes javelin outside as it was not raining. Jav going pretty well - more high hopes for summer.

I'm full of high hopes, me.

When I'm not in the pits of despair that is.

Those last 2 sentences could have been spoken by me!! Really!

Incredible to get such a high wava in training, especially as you were distracted by youth, those kids were lucky to share their training with such an enthusiastic athlete, I well expect they aspire to be like you :-)

One thing that I’m in awe of Sharkie is your confidence to do these disciplines.

The thing I look at now to motivate myself is WAVA and also I believe it’s possible to get ‘fitter’ than I was 10 years ago. There are reasons for this belief but that’s another story. However I can say that now mentally I feel stronger than ever and also wiser 🙂 I’m grateful my body can still adapt if somewhat a little slower to training stress.

Wava is a pretty good motivator I agree. My times have really slipped over the past five years but my sprint wavas are more or less the same. Perhaps a bit worse on my 200m - I'm stuck in the high 70s, where I used to see 80%, 78.16 this year. I'd do better if I liked it more. It's bloody hard work!

60m is by far my 'best' distance and I got my highest ever wava in 2019 - 87.37. HOW much would I love to join that exclusive 90% club... but this year's only 60m was disappointingly slow. Still - birthday in Jan and several chances to get back up there after that. Got to keep the faith and it takes a few races to get back in the zone.

So yes, I agree you CAN still improve in many ways, we just have to work out how to train better.

Oh and I'm NOT a particularly confident person but I do love new stuff. That's the secret to doing technical events - being interested in learning: the discipline, the movement patterns, the head games and mental arithmetic. It's all cool.

I guess it depends on where you start but lots of us can still get fitter and stronger.

It's hard for elderly women to gain muscle and takes a lotto time and effort - but I am proud to boast a deadlift PB this year. Three reps of 55kg - which is more than I weigh (approx 52kg) , always a bit of a target in weight lifting terms.

I am always pushing resistance training for older women. It has SO many advantages. Pretty good for older blokes too!

I’m looking forward to a new journey next year and learn new disciplines, but not so sure of high jumps. I have access to a track so who knows. Work is a word that gets banded about by so many but work ethic is what I consider. Also enduring discomfort and pain, doesn’t sell it very well does it 😂

That is really impressive Sharkie! I know that I should do more strength and flexibility training. I don't do New Year's resolutions, but if I did......

Our club also has access to a track, organised recently. I've been running with mainly the same friends and fellow club members, but hopeful of widening the circle again in 2022, and probably also returning to parkrun.
