Good to see my fellow 60 plus athletes checking in
Have done my home weights session: single leg deadlifts with an 8kg kettlebell, bench press on the ball, tricep dips, various planks and crunches, calf raises, single leg hip bridge... blah, blah, blah.
Not got dumbbells heavier than 4.5kgs here in Dalston, but the kettlebell helped and I did more reps and more single leg stuff to make up.
Am quite pleased with myself!
*rushes off to blog session as is my custom*

Have just looked back to check and I was right: my original idea for this thread was a place where over 60s runners (and other sorts of athletes like me) could check in and discuss training and aspirations. The over 50s thread is great but it's a lot more general.
So with that in mind has anyone got any specific plans (and/or worries to do with fitness and athletics) for 2022? We do have to tailor training as we get older. Well I have had to... but it doesn't mean getting worse or weaker per se. I am DEFINITELY still learning stuff.

I’m thinking of getting a personal trainer in the new year, to help me do some strength work. In fact I’ve already found someone but she’s on a Christmas break at the moment so it’ll wait for a bit.

Oooh excellent, Jenny. Good trainers/coaches/whatevers are worth their weight in gold I've found. I absolutely love my Gemma - she's worth every penny.
Someone who understands YOU and doesn't just dole out a one size fits all programme.

Absolutely. I messaged this woman and told her quite a bit about myself (8 marathons/replacement hip/ hate slowing down but resigned etc) and I could tell from her reply that she totally got it. She’s nearly 50 herself and that makes a difference to me, even if it shouldn’t! I’m looking forward to meeting her.

Jenny wren I think you’ll make some good improvements with a PT who I hope you can trust.

I don't want to make too much of a plan, as I can get quite stressed about feeling that I 'have' to do some training when I'm not feeling up to it. However in 2022, I do hope to explore more muddy trails on my own, run XC for my club and keep a good level of fitness. This year my walking mileage (ie anything over 2 miles in one go) and running mileage have been about the same amount and if I can keep that up (or increase distance), I'll be more than happy as I do think the one helps the other 🙂 (I'm 62).

She sounds the ticket Jenny, she really does. I DO think an older coach/trainer whatever can make a difference. When I was a complete novice sprinter my first proper coach was exactly the same age as me - 55, and still sprinting himself. He was just right for me at that time.
John, my jumps coach, is in his late 50s and also understood how different it is for a 60 something to learn something as technical as the jumps.
Do keep us posted - I'll be so interested to hear what she suggests for you.
