Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Possibly, but it seems to be three miles is the point at which my knee starts complaining whether I run on consecutive days or take some proper rest days.

Anyway tomorrow the plan is a swim in the sea. Knees like that :-)

My knee continues to improve but still niggles a bit, so I've decided to ignore it. Hope yours will soon sort itself out, LD.

Managed a stonking run at our club 3 mile track handicap last night, and astonished myself by finishing in 26:54 and getting a 70 WAVA! So pleased, didn't think I could actually go that fast given my current form.

Wow! Excellent work, jabber.

Such a pity you don't care for the shorter distances ;-) ....

Hello. It is good to see a new thread that focussing on the running activities of us oldies. The Over 50’s thread is also a source of great discussion about running, but that thread does sometimes get lost in reminiscences about other things. For many of us, the impact of age on running does tend to become more noticeable by the mid- 60’s.

In recent years I have reverted to my life-long favourite type of running: off road and preferably in the mountains. The good news is that I spend several days each week in the Lake District. The downside is that I am still tempted to shoe-horn a full working week into the days I spend in Nottingham. I am therefore busier than ever. The past few months have been especially hectic but I usually find time for few off-road runs each week.

My first love is wilderness. I am nonetheless content to enjoy the ‘sheep-wrecked’ hills of Cumbria, though I tend to avoid the parts made popular by Arthur Wainwright. I take special pleasure in stumbling upon an overgrown style giving ‘legitimate’ access to a wooded hillside and perhaps a minor summit, apparently never trodden by AW but nonetheless often providing a delightful view.

Good to hear from you Canute! Also very pleased to hear that you're still getting out along untrodden ways as well as putting in a full whack of intellectual challenge in Nottingham.

Hi Canute, it's really good to hear from you. Returning to a life-long love (providing said love always made you happy) has to be a good thing. I trust you are still enjoying work as well so a quart into a pint pot* as my mum used to say.

I want this thread to be celebratory as well as an injury forum/discussion of issues associated with being over 60 and still wanting to run and do other active stuff. There are plenty of other places for rabbiting on about high and low culture of the past and what sweet shops sold in the 1960ss.

UPDATE: a litre into a half litre pot.

I'm getting my speed back! Trouble with injury post 60 is the t-i-m-e healing and rehab take.

I think I've been really patient. I've binned track meets and training. -The outdoor season seems SO short and at 66 it's impossible not to wonder how many more I might have in me.

But today, with my coach's blessing (his idea actually) 3 x (4 x 60m) 30 seonds between runs, 4 mins between sets. Cool!

... well HOT actually.

Good news, Sharkie, hope there are no ill effects!

League road race this morning then, 6 miles. Set off too fast, just about got to the 5 mile marker OK, but then my legs essentially said bugger off, we've had enough, we want to do that nice, slow'n'ploddy distance stuff - so they did. Bit disappointed, but not really surprised after Friday's unexpectedly speedy run. Fetch Silver standard will have to wait a bit longer!

A day and a half is nothing for recovery after a speedy run like Friday's. And it may well have been a bit warm for 6 miles at pace? It was 27º and felt hotter in the Battersea sunshine.

Weather was a bit strange - warmish, but a cool wind and a few rain showers scattered in, which made it a bit muggy. Can't really blame the weather though, it was definitely my legs!
