A friend is doing the 24 hour ultra in Kent at the end of May and I have agreed to accompany her during those darkest hours between midnight and 6 am. It has slowly been dawning on me that I should do some sort of training for 6 hours on my feet even thought it won't be fast and it won't be pretty! Does anyone have any idea what I should do training-wise?

I've done a couple of hour-long night-time runs at RNR - but nothing approaching that sort of time.

I think it's worth looking at how much light there's going to be, it's quite strange running in total darkness, or in my case, in the beam of a car headlights - it's hard to get perspective on how the road stretches out ahead.

Cycling's not allowed for people accompanying, presumably?

Is it the challengehub 24 event? If so it's on a mostly closed lap, mostly good under foot :) As you're in support you need to establish what sort of pace your runner wishes to hold during those 6 hours, then match your training to that. You shouldn't need to do much more than marathon distance in your training, and at quite a slow speed. The most important thing is to have 'lots' to talk about - distracting your runner from the pain is the key to being a good pacer. Spend some time training with your runner - but hold the best stories back for the event ;)
Most of all make sure you take a positive attitude, as your runner may be going through bad patches in terms of motivation as the day wears on.

cheers guys, much appreciated. I had realised that I need to suss out her run/walk paces, I guess I need to suss out how long she will have been doing those laps for before I join in and I'll see if I can get some happy pills from the doc! I'm not sure that it will be practical to do any training with her as there are quite a few miles between us but I will look into that. Also she is lending me a head torch so I will need to experiment with that.

I've managed to suss out what pace to train at and also when I join my friend, I'm not allowed to say that she looks good if she doesn't - and I'm not allowed to say that she looks like sh1te if she looks like she's suffering :-) Haven't got the head torch yet but I am trying to develop a thick skin for when the swearing starts ;-)

It can be surprising light even in the darkest of nights, but carrying a torch as well as your head torch and be very useful. Bursting into song can lift morale, and do wonders for passing a few miles, think " one man went to mow, the bear went over the mountain, I know a song that will get on you nerves " type song and you cant go wrong. Also carry a few good jokes in your head, you'll know when to use them. Most importantly, dont ask any questions that need thinking about to answer, give them the solution. ie not, do you want a cake or pastie, rather " eat this you need it" . Never, never, say the finish is just around the next corner, unless the finish IS around the next corner.
