Back to back performances is tough. That 40:39 would have taken some oomph out your legs for sure

Well done chunkywizard!

mr d and snoot it sounds as though there are good reasons for slower times.

How did the half go Pothunter? Were you pleased with your time ? Hope you were in a cooler place than me yesterday. Temperatures around here were upto 26 degrees!

Half was good thanks. Didn’t race it by any stretch but instead ran with one of the young ladies from parkrun who was doing her first half. A sprint finish saw us in in just under 1:50 which she was happy with and worked well for me as a tempo training run. Got an ultra on 8 Oct after which I’ll try get some speed back for a crack at a 70% wava at parkrun.

A pretty impressive first half for the young lady so well done on the pacing Pothunter! Do you find that once you have finished training and raced your Ultras that you generally get rewarded with good shorter distance times after some speed work??

It’s my first ultra!

But I did set my 5k PB the week after my first marathon in 2017 :-)

The base mileage certainly helps and my plan is to try a bit of speed work afterwards.

That is quick recovery from a marathon Pothunter! Hope the Ultra goes well for you and will follow your progress with interest. Not that I would ever be tempted by an Ultra even to better my 5km time ☺

Thanks!

Going back to my 2017 marathon I probably could have pushed a bit harder but as it was my first I went out very conservatively. I ran about a 3 min negative split and the last 5k was my fastest. I did absolutely nothing from that Sunday until parkrun and managed to go round in 19:40 :-) The following week I did 19:47 and those remain my only two forays under 20:00.

Not sure it is an optimal strategy for a 5k PB but the planets aligned for me for those couple of weeks :-)

Back into no-man's land, 24:14 @ Ipswich today. Need to find another 1 minute 20 to get back to where I was at the start of May.
