The key is obviously the training. So here's the question on everyones lips (OK, mine). How long should the longest training run be?

Depends. If you opt to follow Hanson's Marathon Method you don't go above 16 miles for your long run (which is not to say that you don't do a lot of running!), but most training plans have you doing several 20-ish mile long runs.

I've done something different each time I've run sub-4, and my third fastest marathon came off no long training runs and tons of cycling.

I'd say get your family's support and then do as much running as your lifestyle and body permit, TBR 😀 And in your specific situation I'd want continuous glucose monitoring.

My fastest marathon was after a month of running every day. Longest run was “only” 16 miles but I had some pretty intense back to backs. Wasn’t deliberately following Hanson but ended up following the intent.

I have heard Hanson is very intense and not for all?

The beginner schedules in Hanson are no harder overall than any other popular training plan and quite compatible with streaking. All the popular off the peg marathon training plans include a lot of running and can take over your life more than the numbers in the grid might suggest in the last couple of months before the race.

Have you chosen a marathon to target?
