I'm off ultras at the moment. I've done a few, but realised that while I enjoy getting out into the countryside for a long day out they don't do a great deal for my running as there's far too much plodding. It's 2 years since my last one and I have no plans to restart them.
On the other hand, I am dipping my toe back into marathons but I'll see how it goes deciding whether it's a long term thing.
I'm now in the 60s for this month, so looking good

The only reason I'm doing one is because everyone tells me that ultras are much more fun than marathons - eating on the move is my kind of fun!
While in Greece supporting OH at Spartathlon, a few participants said I could do one easy. Remind me not to drink so much wine while among those types. Els and Firemnanotsam had a discussion and as a result of us marshalling a couple of Els races I'm in. Oh dear, God help me!
Training has started

I fancy gently introducing myself to the world of ultras - might try the Royal Parks 50k next year I think.

Glenn, a badly paced and badly trained for marathon is as you describe but a marathon can be fun if paced and trained for properly.

Go for it, Mrs W. Personally I find Ultra's not as full on as a marathon, I think a marathon is the peak of distance versus intensity.

me too. I'd take a marathon over dentist's chair any day. Had a root canal treatment done on Tuesday last week and while it wasn't too painful, the aftermath was rather unpleasant. I recovered quicker from the marathon than from the root canal thingy because my jaw was so sore from keeping my mouth wide open for 90 min. Much worse than running almost 4 hours with the appropriate running done before. I think I would have to train my jaw up for 90 min, lol.
