Kent Roadrunner works well because it's only 15 minutes' drive from my parents' house!

DeeGee I have the same problem, I don't drive and don't want to nor have money to spend on hotels (marathons are expensive enough witohout the hotels!) so I can only travel on the day. There are sooooo many marathons that I would have wanted to do but first train on the ay arrives 0.5 - 3 hours too late, and I have an option to travel from Liverpool or London. Gloucester, Wolverhampton, Kent Coastal, Robin Hood, Sussex, Sunderland, and so on (seriously I could find at least 20!). Even Chester, Blackpool and Preston which are some 20 miles away start too early for the first train on the day! Fortunately there is a National Express coach.
Enigma marathons are one of the few I have no problems getting to.
I think even among event organisers/management companies a perception exist that a marathon is once in a lifetime (or at least once in a year) experience so if you want to run one you are immediately willing to splash money on a Hilton hotel. Or indeed it is assumed that everyone has a car and money for petrol. I thought we were meant to care about the environment and encourage public transport use? If only they started at a more public transport friendly hour they could potentially have so much more interest. I wonder if they don't realise it or just don't care.

Jim Manford, who is a great guy doing wonderful things for marathon running in the North East organises a fantastic race up the Northumberland Coast. It starts in a town with a station right on the East Coast Main Line, but with a limited service.
This year the race started at 10am. The first train into Alnmouth is 10:11 :-0! Hence a night in Alnwick was required.
As marathon running is my only vice, I can just about afford this once a month.

It is a pity that we have such a "green" hobby (and it's in our interest to keep the environment nice, keep pollution down and keep cars off the roads) but that we're forced into cars when it comes to racing.

They do sound perfect, but unless you can persuade Buckinghamshire County Council to share ownership of Milton Keynes around a bit, I'll never meet my target of a race in every county!

As a none driver and train dependent getting to marathons can a be a logistical nightmare as like DeeGee getting out of my home town is restricted-they seem to think people don't want to travel on weekends before a certain time of day especially on a Sunday!Nor get back later in the evening!
