We thank you for your interest in Carnegie Harriers and would like to take this opportunity to tell you more about the club.

Carnegie Harriers were formed in August 1991, to cater for the interests of road runners in the Dunfermline area.

Since then our range of activities has been extended to include cross country and hill running, an event that is becoming increasingly popular with our members. Whatever the distance, someone in the club is likely to have run it - from a mile to a marathon and considerably beyond (more about that later), there's no stopping us!

As well as taking part in races throughout Scotland and beyond, we do our bit to promote the sport by organising a number of events during the year. From April to September we host a series of one and two mile races on the first Friday of each month as well as the highly successful "Auld Toun 10k" on the second Wednesday in May and the "Graham Clark 3.9 Mile Memorial Race" in late August. These are open races and attract runners of all abilities.

So why should you join us? The club provides an opportunity to make new friends, explore new routes and exchange training ideas. Our structured training sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings will help improve your overall fitness and performance as well as those all-important PB's.

For the more competitive there is the chance to represent the club in a variety of team events during the year. You can also earn points at selected races to count towards our annual awards, where we give prizes in all three disciplines of road, hill and cross country running. On top of this we have several members only races and regular time trials.

If you prefer longer runs, you could follow in the footsteps of Pauline Walker who became the first Harrier to complete the West Highland Way run (all 97 miles of it) after warming up on the Speyside Way (50k) and the Two Bridges road race (36 miles). Alternatively if you want something more vertically challenging, how about a hill run.

If all this sounds a bit serious, don't worry, it's not compulsory. Nor should you be put off by the mistaken belief you have to be a good runner to join the club - we aim to cater for all levels. This applies to the social aspect as well but be warned, there can be some serious post-race "replacement of lost fluid" and "liquid carbo-loading" sessions which are definitely not for the faint hearted.

If all of this has still not persuaded you to join us, as a bonus you get to wear our "discrete" but distinctive (luminous green and orange) club colours and discounts at a number of local retailers and specialist running shops. But by far the biggest benefit of joining Carnegie Harriers is the support and encouragement you will get from fellow club members. Whether you are new to the area, new to the sport, been running for some time on your own or already an experienced runner, we're confident we have something to offer. But don't just take our word for it - come along to one or our training nights and see for yourself.

We're proud of the progress we've made over the past fifteen years, thanks to the hard work of our members and the support of our new sponsors, Powerleague. We hope you will join us and contribute to our continued success. But above all, we hope we can help you to get the same enjoyment out of running as we do. We look forward to welcoming you to Carnegie Harriers.
