A Maths Challenge

8:42am, 27 Feb 2019
Let's say that someone has a database of N different training entries, where N is a jolly big number.

Each training entry has a set of latitudes and longitudes corresponding to the routes that the runner / cyclist / walker etc took.

What is the most efficient way of finding out whether two routes are in fact the "same" route?

Things to look out for:

1) the occasional "dodgy" signal point in the data.
2) a different sampling rate e.g. some watches sample every second, others every five seconds.
3) routes are often run at varying paces, so one person may spend much longer in a certain part of the map.
4) the routes can be short e.g. a mile, or they can be very long e.g. a 100 mile ultra.
5) what level of similarity should constitute "same"?
6) this information needs to be available in as close to real time as possible.

There's a lifetime of adulation for anyone providing evidence that leads to successful criminal proceedings :-) Links to research / white papers / methods / algorithms all welcome.

  • I have a friend who uses geographic profiling in his research. This a statistical technique originally developed in criminology to prioritise large lists of suspects in cases of serial crime. He has pioneered it's use in areas such as animal foraging, epidemiology and invasive species biology. His group uses a Bayesian approach, that uses data from multiple sources.

I have absolutely no idea if he could help you. But I can ask.

  • Hi Ian
    Lots of options …
    1) Hausdorff distance (wiki has a good starting description)
    2) Geographic Information Systems Stack Exchange seems to have reams of conversations (yet to find absolute answers though, in fully 2 mins research), eg
    gis.stackexchange.com
    gis.stackexchange.com
    gis.stackexchange.com

    3) Also saw this – not sure if you use something similar for mapping to roads/paths?
    mapmatching.3scale.net

But you may also want to think about user parameters - eg if I run in the forest, I meander, I have bio-pauses, I take photos, so the same route for me would allow quite a few variations. If I was measuring speed & time, I'd have a far tighter concept of 'same route' than a general deer hunting ramble ...

I did a maths degree (many years ago) and do have some time - so if you want any help researching specific areas or algorithms, please feel free to ask (I do have time now I'm retired)

  • It's an interesting question Fetch.

In the first instance, I think that parkrun is your friend here - within PR you've got a dataset that gives you GPS variability on the day between devices, and on different days over a long period. I suspect that should give you enough to establish the correlation/error between identical routes.
I don't know enough about taking that correlation to everything else to comment in depth, but TeeBee's Bayes/ML suggestion might work well - The computation cost will be in building the model (but the AWS/Azure/etc free trials will help reduce that cost) but running it once built needn't be too resource heavy

  • Some thoughts (dredging up a project I did on pattern matching 30 years ago...)

Narrow down the search space by:
    a. Is the overall distance broadly the same
    b. Are the start and end points broadly the same
    c. What is the rough shape of the rectangle that you could draw around the route

I imagine you could store these as part of the 'signature' of each run, which would allow you to do a very quick shortlisting exercise.

So you've now got your run with a box round it, and a shorter list of other runs with similar sized boxes drawn round them. Take out a sheet of electronic graph paper, and colour in all the squares the route goes through. And do the same with the routes in your shortlisted library. Overlay the new route with each one from the library in turn, and hold it up to the light. If 90% (maybe 95% - it would need some tuning) of these squares overlap, it's a match. Kind of like saying do they go through the same Conquercise zones - but that would be too coarse. Maybe the hexagons?

Use some user feedback to tune the algorithm. e.g. "The system things you might have run this route before on (date). Is it right?", or "The system doesn't think you've run this before, but let us know if you have".

  • Sharing my algorithm, to see if it inspires any further suggestions... I round each point on the route (quite savagely). Each point therefore snaps to a square. I build a list of the squares that the route visits, then put this list through an md5 to get a unique string representing that route. For comparison, it’s then a simple job of finding a matching string. The issue happens when one point is at the edge of a square. If it snaps into a different square, then the generated string is different. But the benefit of the string is that it’s pretty quick to do the search.

  • My initial thoughts were along the line of Stu's in that it sounds like a ML problem and that you have a large dataset to feed the model. But then wondered how well this would work as the dataset isn't the typical "here's a bunch of somethings and a bunch of not-somethings" - you'd probably have to group them first to show what a common route looks like, and I'm not sure that using parkruns or races would work too well as all samples would be very closely aligned and not account for the degrees of variability mentioned above (disclaimer: my ML knowledge is limited :-) )
This leads me to think an algorithmic approach may be easier. I'll ponder some more.
Do you have contacts in any higher education institutions as this sounds ideal for CS grads looking for a thesis project?

    8:37am, 28th Feb 2019
  • At the risk of boring everyone ... 1/2 degree sounds too big? Other than an initial sanity check of 'are we even in the right county?'
Conquersize zones (I think) are 0.02 degree?

My thought process - unless it will need extra hamsters ...

    - do what you currently do, it seems to work quite well (unless you want to decrease the snap-to-square size)
    - offset the snap-to-squares by 50% (so any 'edge points' become centre points) and re-run the md5 thingy
    - compare both for runs and offer a %age match .. no scence to it yet, but eg, >95% flag as a match, >80% flag as potential match
    - some initial check on distance being +- 5% ?
    - some user input allowed (as per EdJ & Fizz) - maybe prompted (if user requests it in their profile) for >80%.

Will have a play with snap-to-zones and routes and see likely matches & percentages?
And computing power needed for (eg) 100m squares? How efficient is the md5? Can it take (eg) 10 mile run through 100m squares and churn out a string for matching in milliseconds? Or is there a natural limit to it?
    um

  • Does one limitation of your md5 approach mean that two very similar routes / activities may have wildy un-matching signatures?

    e.g. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
    C7C6ABFA9CB508F7FC178D4045313A94

    AAAAAAAAABAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
    E4D715A900DDED171287EE6A467CB703

So you don't have much ability to allow users to review other "close" routes / close matches?

Fix It Friday: The Fix Awakens

12:32pm, 22 Feb 2019
It's been a good week for getting stuff done :-)

1) It's not really a tech update, but I had fun pretending to be an editor with Metro_Nome and The Duckinator's VVX blog. I'm pretty sure I could have published it entirely untouched - but I do like doing a bit of editing :-) If you've not read it yet, have a look at fetcheveryone.com/vvx.php

2) One of our users made use of the Fitbit app on her iPhone to record her activity - but it wasn't coming through via our importing tool. Some slight adjustments later, that's all sorted. If you've got a Fitbit, you can import here: fetcheveryone.com/fitbit.php

3) Another couple of users noticed that when using our Fitbit importer, their heart rate wasn't coming across. It turns out this is a permissions thing. All sorted now.

4) This was a real undo job. Previously, our weight tracker had a free text box where you could enter a number representing your weight in pounds or kilos. I'd been asked whether I could do something to help the users who think in stones-and-pounds. So I'd put in a dropdown box that gave all weights from 6st up to 30st, in increments of 100 grams :-) But a loss is a loss, and if you wanted to record 50g less, or 1050g, or whatever, it wasn't quite doing the job. So I've reverted back to the free text box, but made a few minor usability amendments instead. For example, the box will contain your previous measurement, so it's a tiny bit easier to calculate if you know you've lost a pound, or whatevs. Track your weight here: fetcheveryone.com/weight

5) I've been surprised by the number of people who've contacted me about this one. In our race finder, you used to be able to put in "travel distance = infinity" to return results from all over the world. We have a lot of races, so a "show me everything" query can put the server under a bit of stress. To get round this, I'd limited the search radius to 200 miles. All the queries I'd received were along the lines of "but I want to search somewhere further than 200 miles away". The simple answer is to change your search location from "wherever you live" to "Paris", or "Mumbai", or "Sydney" or wherever it is you want to search. A couple of users raised the point that they still wanted to check different regions for races, in order to plan holidays nearby. So as a compromise, there's now a "travel distance = 500" option in the drop down. Here's the race finder: fetcheveryone.com/races-map.php

6) Conquercise. We have lots of enthusiastic players, and some great zone names. But occasionally, someone will take ownership of a zone, and never give it a name. Frustrating for those nearby, and for those who Like Things To Be Done Right. So the new rule now is that if you've explored a zone with no name, you can give it a name. The owner can still change it, if they're interested in the game. If you'd like another look at the game, here's the link: fetcheveryone.com/game-conq.php

7) Suunto users. Until recently, we'd not had the ability to automatically import your data from Suunto watches. The only option was to go to the Movescount website, export a FIT file, then import it to Fetch. This week I got given access to the Suunto test API, and I've knocked up an importer that's very similar to the Fitbit and TomTom ones. There's scope for making it an automated import too. I'm waiting for approval to use the live system. If you're a Suunto user, follow this thread for further updates: fetcheveryone.com/viewtopic.php?id=60251

8) Annual Mileage Targets. This caused a bit of a kerfuffle yesterday. For the last couple of years, I've asked you all to resubmit your mileage targets each year. People come and go, and their goals also change. One of our tables was still including old targets. I fixed that bug first of all, which removed all the people who no longer care. But it did mean that some of those who really wanted to be on the table, but who hadn't submitted a target for 2019, were a bit upset :-) Anyway... bang your targets in here fetcheveryone.com/training-targets.php#amend and get your kit on.

9) Week Summary. If your week starts on anything other than a Monday, this was showing your runs, rides etc on the wrong days. It should be fixed now. See your weekly summary here: fetcheveryone.com/training-week.php

10) Training log. I'm always at my most careful when I make changes to this, because it's one of our crown jewels. So I've put out a prototype for you to try out before adjusting the 'live' version.

Live version: fetcheveryone.com/training.php
Prototype: fetcheveryone.com/training-new.php

Here's what to look out for:

a) the little cog next to 'Your Training Log' was being missed. So now it's a 'Settings' button.
b) you had to scroll down a fair bit to change the date range. It's right up top now.
c) As you can see in the comparison images, the more years you're here, the further you have to scroll. Now the monthly totals are behind a "Monthly Totals" button. And when you view them, the different sub-options are hopefully a little bit clearer than the drop-down box on the old monthly totals.
d) The dropdown box to filter to (say) only intervals is also behind a 'Filter' button.
e) Just a bit of tidying up of the tabs.

The overall effect is (hopefully) to get you a lot closer to your training entries. As you can see in the prototype comparison, the actual training entries are visible with less scrolling, and the other stuff is available with just a tap.

Have a go, and if something's not working right in the new version, do please check how it works in the live version for comparison - as I know there are a few live bugs to iron out too.

That's your lot for this week :-) Leave your comments on this week's changes down below, and send your feedback in to the usual page: fetcheveryone.com/feedback.php - if you have multiple things to say, put them in separate messages for a quicker response :-) Have a great weekend, and don't forget to download the podcast :-) C'mon Wales!

Fix It Friday

1:29pm, 15 Feb 2019
Another week, and yet more adjustments, fixes and unbotches to report :-)

1) Monthly Summary. There have been some minor bug fixes to this, but I've also been working on the mobile view. The right-hand image is what it looks like now. As always, it's about saving your poor scrolling thumb from having to do excess work, whilst making sure that the content doesn't get too squished up on small screens. So you'll hopefully notice some tidying up at the top; smaller black boxes; unsquishing of the dates under the columns; and as a result, more info available without the need to scroll.

1b) A few people have asked about how to access this page outside of my blogs :-) I'm working on that - I want to make it fit in nicely somewhere, but for now, here's that link again: fetcheveryone.com/month

2) I've been trying to make some progress with getting automatic data transfer from Suunto watches. This week I put in an application for the Suunto Partner programme. I've no idea whether it'll be successful, but if it is, we'll get something similar to the Garmin import, or failing that, something like the TomTom / Fitbit import. Either way, it'll be a step up from what we have right now.

3) I've also been playing email tennis with Fitbit over a couple of issues. The first is swimming data from the Ionic (there doesn't seem to be any); and the second is a weird one. If I manually export a run from the Fitbit website, it contains HR data. However, if I grab it using the automated method, it doesn't appear to do so. I will hopefully get some useful responses on those soon.

4) Cross Training shortcodes. Walking as a loggable activity has taken off in the last year or so. Previously, all our cross-training categories appear in the training log as 'CT' - but now, thanks to a suggestion, Walking=W, Nordic Walking = Nw, Hiking = Hk.

5) Weight page. I've been working on this today to (a) make it less sumsy for those using lbs - no more having to work out that 12st10 = 178lbs before entering it. And (b), I've also made the mobile view a bit friendlier.

And that's it for this week. It feels like I've done more than that :-)

STAR OF THE WEEK: (ooh, is that a thing?) chunkywizard, for reporting various bugs as separate feedbacks. As a rule, I tend not to reply to a feedback until I can answer all of it, so if you send me something that says "What's 2+2, oh and can you define pi?", you'll wait a lot longer for that '4' than if you send that as two separate queries. Here's the feedback link: fetcheveryone.com/feedback.php

  • Is it just me, or do the weight graphs not work? I've got a target set of 75kg, and current weight is around 73, but has historically been over that. If I view the 120 monthgraph I can see a nice line etc, but if I switch to more recent view I get nothing at all - just the two axises / axes I don't have any readings to input for fat / water / muscle.

It seems that the dynamic scaling on the LHS doesn't appear to grab any data until I go back to a 24 month view, and even then it shows an insufficient calc. Probably should add this into feedback, but maybe I'll crowdsource an answer to something idiotic that I've overlooked!

  • Aha, debugged my problem somewhat. My "target" is 75kg, but I've got 2-3kg under that in recent years. If I remove the target and set one which is lower then it dynamically reshapes the graph appropriately, but if my target is too high (as it seems 75kg in relation to current weight at 73kg appears to be) then the graph doesn't get drawn properly.

Fix It Friday - Monthly Summary

1:52pm, 8 Feb 2019
This week I've been focusing the majority of my coding efforts on the monthly summary page, working on your feedback from my previous blog. Take a look at it here:

fetcheveryone.com/training-month.php

Example:

You might not notice major differences if you looked at the page yesterday, but I've been working behind the scenes. The page is pulled together from a variety of sources, and I wanted to make sure that if it becomes a popular feature, it doesn't cause problems for the server.

When you first view the page, the summary data gets pulled together, and then stored in a cache. This means that it's really quick and non-server-intensive to get it next time. It also means that I can grab the cached data to generate a corresponding infographic image for you to share on social media. It also opens the door for larkim's request to summarise longer chunks of time.

There are a few more updates to come:

1) Adding cross-training data
2) Adding monthly target progress indicator
3) Adding indicators to show if a race was SB, PB etc.
4) Adjusting the heights of the columns (biking is currently very tall, and swimming is very short).
5) Include kit usage
6) Date numbers are a bit squished on mobile

and of course, I'm keen to turn those black boxes at the top into something a bit more infographic-al. If you've seen a nice infographic that summarises a persons exercise, and want to send me a screenshot for reference, it's ian@... you know the rest.

StuH asked about whether this will be integrated in somewhere - and yes, that's definitely the plan. I really needed to get the caching sorted first, so we're a step closer.

Keep the feedback coming in, and have a great weekend :-)

  • It's looking really good!
Maybe another for the list; my HR settings are correct, (RHR = 46, MHR = 184), but whereas this generates a good 'zoning' in Garmin (see image
), for the same period on Fetch I have 5% "Green" and 94% "Grey", which doesn't tell me a lot. I appreciate this may be down to how you receive the data from Garmin. It would be nice to be able to set our own HR Zones.

Training Month Summary

3:36pm, 6 Feb 2019
I've been making some updates to the new page I'm building that will summarise any given month of your training. Have a look see at how your February is shaping up:

fetcheveryone.com/training-month.php

I'll talk you through it:

1) At the top you've got the month name, and two links to previous and next month. The sharper of you will notice that you can amend the URL to quickly jump to a specific month and year.

2) If you do multi-sport training, there are tabs for run, swim and bike, and a fourth tab for races, if you've done some.

3) There are a whole bunch of black boxes (you may not have all of these):
a) Total mileage for the month
b) Total time spent running
c) Average pace
d) Month rank i.e. if this is your highest mileage month ever, it would be rank 1.
e) February rank i.e. how does it compare to your other February efforts.
f) Total ascent
g) Average cadence
h) Average heart rate
i) Average power
j) Beats per mile across the entire month.
k) Best 400m, 800m, 1k, mile, 5k, 5 mile, 10k, 10 mile, half and mara.

4) Pace distribution, showing the percentage of time you spent in each of your colour bands. Don't understand how the colour bands work? I normally set the red one to my 5k eyeballs-on-stalks pace, and the blue one to my long run pace, with a few bands in between. Keep your long runs blue and grey; keep your speedwork red and orange; and stay out of the middle bit :-)

5) Then you get a bar chart showing your runs throughout the month, also colour coded according to your pace.

6) Then you'll see a simple list of all your training entries for that month, and some little yellow trophy icons showing the ones where you recorded your fastest 400, 800, 5k etc.

I also plan to turn this entire page into some sort of nice infographic image that will be shareable on social media - so the fools that shop elsewhere can see what we have to offer :-)

If you're interested in seeing another piece of summary data added to this page, or if you're seeing unusual stuff that might be relating to your specific data, leave a comment below (I plan to add some more detailed HR stats).

Toot toot!

Oh, and don't forget to listen to our podcast! We'd like to get your questions too - record yourself on your phone and email it to podcast@fetcheveryone.com - only one received so far :-)

  • What a fantastic report!

One anomaly to report, and one suggestion:

First, the anomaly: for January it's saying my best 5 miles were 52:29, but in fact I did a 5 mile race in 46:16 (the training entry does list it as 8.05 km, i.e. 5 miles) - might be a rounding off issue?

Secondly, the suggestion: the races tab would be better if it also had two extra columns: one for the race distance, and one showing whether the result was a SB or PB. This information is already on here so I would hope it's not too difficult to add.
    Sigh

I realise some people use Kit for stuff other than shoes, but if they're tracking it then they must be interested in it so not asking you to pull out just shoes, just a list all Kit used that month and how many miles per piece of kit.

Podcast Q&A

3:51pm, 5 Feb 2019
Now that hopefully most of you have made it back online, here's a wee challenge for you.

By now you're probably well aware that we have a podcast. Wait, you're not? Catch up on the first five episodes here:

iTunes: itunes.apple.com
Spotify: open.spotify.com
Buzzsprout: fetcheveryone.buzzsprout.com

Anyway... we'd love to get more voices on the podcast. I totally understand that recording yourself doing 'a piece' might be a bit daunting - but how about just a question?

Get the voice recording app on your phone (on iPhone it's called 'Voice Memos', and on Android it's probably called Voicy McVoiceface or something similar), sit somewhere quiet and record your question. Then just click the share button to send it via email to podcast@fetcheveryone.com - and we'll put you in the show and try to answer your question.

G'wan. Say you will.

  • I think for some reason Spotify missed it out. Buzzsprout is where the files are actually hosted, so if you can't find an episode anywhere else, it's the place to look. But episode 1 was more of a pilot really.

If you can't read this, don't panic.

1:02pm, 5 Feb 2019
If you're connected to us via BT internet, you probably can't read this just now. Users on our Facebook and Twitter feeds have told me that they can reach other sites, but not Fetch. And those with non-BT 4G can access the site just fine.

Lollingly, I've tried to sign up to the BT community forum, to post about our issue, and to try to get feedback / a solution. But the 'confirmation of account' email they send when you sign up seems to have gone missing too.

Just one of those days when I thought I was gonna get stuff done... :-)

EDIT: So it looks like a DNS issue. DNS = Domain Name System. It's the thing that converts 'fetcheveryone.com' into the IP address of the server where our site lives. And it *seems* like the bad info is originating from our hosting provider :-/ I've contacted them, but await their fix. Gah.

Fix It Friday bluesaber

1:29pm, 1 Feb 2019
A severely short list this week... but I'll publish it anyway.

1) Reminders on weight page. You can set for every day, or for a specific day of the week; and you can choose the hour of the reminder. fetcheveryone.com/weight

2) Added this link: fetcheveryone.com/training-prerace.php to this page: fetcheveryone.com/training-analysis-home.php - some of these tools are a bit old. Any suggestions?

3) greensaber - just because :-)

4) A few people have asked me to put together some kind of monthly summary page, that brings together stuff like your mileage, your pace distribution, time spent in heart rate zones, any races you've done, how you're doing against your targets, etc. Ideally, the page will be shareable, so that non-Fetchies could see just what we have to offer.

The nearest thing we have is the weekly summary page, which looks like this:

fetcheveryone.com/training-week.php

So I thought it'd be good to take on board your suggestions as I code the month page. Here it is, not really working yet, but check back every half hour or so throughout the rest of the day, and it'll get updated:

fetcheveryone.com/training-month.php?year=2019&month=1

Right now, it's just an amended version of the weekly summary, so it's all rather smushed together - but hopefully you can see where I'm going with it.

Leave your comments for suggestions for this page, and I'll update this blog entry to add notes as I implement stuff.

And if you don't have time for any of that, don't forget to listen in to any of the first four episodes of the new Fetcheveryone podcast (episode 5 released on Monday). Here are some listening links:

itunes.apple.com
open.spotify.com
fetcheveryone.buzzsprout.com

If you're an Android user, just get hold of the Podcasts app, and you should be able to search for 'fetcheveryone'.

Have a great weekend :-)

  • Liking the monthly summary. Can you add an option to turn off the zone data?

  • Ohh bluesaber greensaber redsaber
When we have a planned session in the training log, it does now disappear when we upload an actual that day which is great (thanks!) but the notification is still there for 'you have a planned session..' - when that's clicked on, it links to a blank session on 1st January 2020. Can the notification disappear as well as the training plan/log entry? Ta!

  • Will look at the monthly summary later, just about to do the school pickup! Thanks again for the 'goal' line on the weight chart.
    Sigh
    3:14pm, 1st Feb 2019
  • That's great! Did I notice a change in the WSW grid page on mobile? I can see the numbers clearly now and the whole grid. Or maybe that occurs when it's not my game, and I'm noticing it for the first time! ;-)

    3:26pm, 1st Feb 2019
  • Love the zone data, could you add a % in each zone for the month please?
    Bob!
    3:35pm, 1st Feb 2019
  • I like the red 'running' banner and the top graph with the dates; it doesn't need the two lines of data in black/grey underneath; the Zone summaries in the coloured boxes are good but again, don't need the black/grey data underneath; cross training could be shown as a simple box in the same style as the top red 'running' one, ditto the total time.

If you've cycled or swum does it show those as well?
Obvs not seen the races section or progress vs. targets yet.

Which reminds me: I had a go at setting some goals using the function under the 'train' menu - good feature but the options on completion are very basic - can't really do much other than 'tick'.
    Sigh

  • The predictions could be more sophisticated. You give one set, I'm assuming based on the 1.06 formula? How about another based on WAVAs? Give a race time at the top, and have it show you the equivalents in the two systems. Extrapolating up to marathon you may find some interesting differences!
